  27. After the collapse of the ussr the Ukrainian srr got the lands of crimea Donetsk and lugansk . These areas are quite diverse the two main ethnicities in the regions are Ukrainians and russians while in crimea russians made 62% if the population in the rest of the area they were around 48-49% the same for Ukraine while the rest were other ethnic minorities . After the collapse of the ussr Russia was left without Crimea and the other area . Russians within Russia did want to take the lands in 2014 Putin's popularity was waning so Putin decided to attack and take those regions to boost his popularity also Ukrainiane was looking more and more torwads the west so Russia didn't want Ukraine to join nato and the eu (because other countries shouldn't be allowed to make their own decisions ) so creating problems could prevent it . The local russian populations of the regions did like the move as they were russians and Russia had better living standards compared to Ukraine (higher wages , higher pensions , better social programs ) while the local Ukrainian and Tatar populations opposed the moves .
