  10. We were moving office back when LCD panels were fairly new. One of the monitors had permanent finger marks where it had been picked up so we made the moving company pay for it. One of my colleagues kept using that monitor for another three years.

  11. The Prius is a hybrid that's still primarily a gas vehicle so the size of the battery pack is a bit arbitrary and will typically be smaller than a pure EV vehicle. It was originally not intended to be charged externally at all (though some people found ways to do so). Vehicles like the Volt are designed to rely more heavily on the battery.

That strategist potentially could if backed with a bit more evidence on performance but on its own, not so much and sounds a bit like a fluff job title. Elected official, is, of course, a low skilled job, (attempted Trump jab aside). Now, their staffers who get (and keep) them elected, that's another story.

  30. It's always been a broken business model to me. The people using their service for hosting don't pay for it. The advertisers are the source of money (what isn't coming from 'Alphabet' or VCs) and the connection to anything is all wrong. This leads to all kinds of wrong incentives. The correct model is for the viewers to pay for the content (with various ways to manage that, potentially including free tiers) and for that to pay for the bandwidth and hosting. Whenever I say this, people complain but it's usually those who want something for nothing. Some services out there appear to be going that way (locals for instance, though I think there are still issues with their model) and I think that kind of setup will ultimately prove the most durable.

  33.  @chubbymoth5810  Very much so. I live in an old small city and you can see how it used to work as a community. Unfortunately, all the stores on main street don't really serve the same purpose any more (though there are a couple of older holdouts). Ironically, places like Dollar General are bringing groceries back to being local.

  36. I was thinking it might be cool to pick a decent quality printer and come up with a community firmware for it. Just have it ignore the cartridge level. I do have some cartridges that reset once they are empty (you just have to remove them from the printer once). So they are available, for some printers at least.

  38. Usually these are phrased so that if you quit early, you have to pay for the training. Which is probably fair enough if there's no shenanigans with the price of the training. You should avoid this if it's training that's only useful to that one company though.

  41. Sadly, the police are often ignorant of the facts of the law (somewhat understandable, there's a lot of it) and many are lazy. This is completely actionable with video evidence but the dude got fobbed off because the cop he called has exactly the same mentality as the guy with the box cutter.

  44. My daughter spilled milk on a 7950 (don't ask how) which appeared to have killed it. I tried stripping down and washing with distilled water and IPA but still no go. Think I might try an ultrasonic and see if that can bring it back to life. There are no apparent signs of water/liquid damage so maybe it got under some chips?

  49. Big cities don't work. They were doomed from the day one computer was connected to another. The depreciation of the value they provided for networking was inevitable from that point on. (There is still a place for cities as some network effect is still beneficial)
