U.S. and its allies will continue to bully China into technological submission as it staggers down the path of crony capitalism with the CCP's boot on its neck. We'll see how China's rôle as peace maker plays out in Saudi Arabia and Iran. If it moves beyond anything more than securing additional sources of petroleum or finds new markets for low tech manufactured goods. The refusal of those countries to move away from the petro dollar to the yuan is a nonstarter. The looming failures of the belt and road initiative will impede China's efforts to shoehorn its own brand of hegemony into Middle Eastern policies.

  5. If you follow any of the other China commentators (those who had lived there). Maintenance of the buildings where they had bought apartments, was nonexistent. Within 5 years elevators had stopped working. Tiles were falling off the facades and landscaping totally neglected. China's economic miracle is destined to be a page in history, not a sustainable future.

  11. I thought the Western analysts were joking with their 5% GDP growth...parroting Beijing. The only market growth last year was in the heavily subsidized auto industry that redultef in killing the used car market by undercutting their prices. The post pandemic domestic rebound already petered out by March of this year. Xi's saber rattling in an attempt to distract the population and shift blame onto the west wont inspire confidence in the domestic markets. Xi is stuck between a rock and a hard place, that being his intractable policies and the moribund economy.

The one thing China has yet to be able to grind out is capable military personnel to fill their ships, planes, and tanks. China is 2 decades away from fulfilling Xi's fantastic dream of global dominance of the sea lanes. The CCP is teetering on the brink of collapse on every other front. Xi may be in line for an early retirement before too long.

Eight of the largest steel producers have shut down due to the collapse of the real estate market. China will never recover economically to pre pandemic levels.

  23. @gtw4546  Nope. Once the down payment is made, the balance is normally borrowed in full from the bank. The debt is to the bank regardless of whether the developer has started the build, left unfinished, or reinvested the money in additional property for another project. Recovering the down payment has proven to be a hopeless task as the money has been spent on further property acquisition. The government has been reluctant to intervene to help the buyer recover their money.

I believe food insecurity will be the next big wave of instability China and its government will be faced with by the end of this year. The government's insane policy of destroying farmland to fuel the now failed boom in real estate will be coming back to bite them in the ass as the next couple of crop cycles fail from the unprecedented water shortages last year.

The devastation will run into billions of dollars just for the clean up. Xi is facing a crisis of leadership that will signal the end of his political career with one more wrong move.
