But if you're serious about managing your portfolio get some books that give you the academic theory on how to perform security analysis. Then get another good book or two on economic theory. Once you have a good understanding of these two very complex topics pay good attention to what's going on around the world. Then you're ready to send these financial "geniuses" packing and take control of your own future. Trust me, these financial geniuses have no clue in which direction the market is going. This is why they always recommend to stay put. They're clueless!! Anyway, good luck!! Edit: I might even recommend that you get a good book with academic theory on fixed income but you could execute a simple investing strategy without this knowledge. However, with the additional knowledge of the fixed income markets you'd be a financial sniper. As I said, good luck!

  16. FINRA and the SEC come to mind. Our industry is heavily regulated. The last investment firm that I worked for had me, at the time of hire, scan my fingerprints and check my financial and criminal background. On top of that, FINRA keeps records of all licensed professionals in the industry and any securities law violations on their site for the public to see.

I think you'll find the romance one-sided. I live in the Boston area. Trust me, $120k is peanuts here and you surely won't become a millionaire off savings within a decade making only $120k per year. Now, what percent of the population do you think make $120k or more per year? Re-read my original comment and think about it this time.

  22. If your checking account balance goes up or down 30% any given day at no fault of your own, do you not think that's a risk to you? Volatility affects long term investments as well because unless you plan to never sell your investments at some point the long term becomes the short term.

  23. Exactly what I was thinking!! I used macros in the past as well but now I use Power Query for the most complex projects. Some tasks are more difficult than others but I spend as much time as needed to come up with solutions that are intuitive and easy to update. The problem with macros is that if you change anything in the file the macros breaks down and most people won't be able to quickly fix the problem.

  24. The banks can't pass on the full inflation rate to the consumer because then consumers wouldn't take out loans unless they were desperate. As a rule, desperate borrowers have higher risk of default. This means banks have to take a loss in the short term and hope they can make it up later as inflation comes back down. The real rate of return for banks is negative when inflation gets too high and economic activity declines which means banks are essentially trapped in inflationary periods.

  25. The stock price is just a battle between sellers and buyers. For the price to move one side has to inflict more pressure than the other. If there are more sellers than buyers the price will go down until there is an equilibrium between buyers and sellers. Otherwise, if sellers continue to win the battle they can drive the price down to $0. Usually, the stock price will be halted after a certain point and potentially dropped from the stock exchange before it goes to $0. Either way, this isn't good unless you have put options on the stock.

  26. Its a rip off. The guy in the video had a point. Outside of the employer match there is little point in investing further into a 401k other than the pre-tax investment benefit. Today's billionaires didn't earn their wealth through a 401k. This is the part that most academics like our friend the plain bagle conveniently ignore. In all reality, 401ks are designed for financially illiterate people.

That said, we choose how we want to live and many don't want to wait until they-re 65-70 years old to enjoy financial independence. On one hand we have the billionaires of the world and the countless millionaires who took a chance and then we have the masses who will spend their lifetime in the office doing meaningless work hoping to be financially independent at 65-70 years old. As I said, the guy in the video isn't entirely wrong.

  28. Same! I spend all Friday evening working on a template to migrate 500k rows of financial data using Excel. I used Power Query and I'm very satisfied with the end result. It sucked working late on Friday but result is very clean and my team will know I built it to save them lots of time doing tedious manual work.

  31. Absolutely! Today, with 365 and Power Query the only real limitation is size. Otherwise, there isn't much that Excel can't do in terms of analysis and data transformation (ETL).

I have a degree in finance as well and there is nothing fun about going through 10-ks (mostly black and white) with over 100 pages long and doing research that might take days or weeks to produce a proper security analysis paper that nobody is going to read.

  34. I'm still trying to wrap my ahead about trading stock options without owning the underlying security. What happens when you want to exercise a call option ITM and you don't have the money to buy the lot of shares. Do you have get a loan or go on margin to exercise the option?? Also, I don't understand how you can offset the cost of options by buying more options.

Someone who owns a "call option" ITM could also sell the option in the open market and liquidate the position without ever owning the underlying lot of shares. Does that sound correct? Does that sound right? The other part makes sense.

  37.  @UAGuides  . I agree 100%!! I have a degree in finance with a focus on security analysis and have worked in the industry for a number of years as an analyst. These gurus are nowhere to be found when you need their advice the most (at the height of the market). However, they got every bullshit excuse when things go south. I would advice anyone interested in learning how to manage their portfolios to stay far away from financial gurus. The dirty secret is that they have no clue whether the market is going up, down, or sideways. But they sure love cite worthless research papers and academic jargon to present themselves as gurus while they raid your portfolio. Anyway, buy the dip if you can and good luck with your portfolio.

  40.  @xman7695  . While I agree that saving as much as you can is a good idea I don't agree with blindly putting money into the market and hoping for the best. I would ask why you invested in the stock that went down 50% but my guess is that you didn't perform a discounted cash flow model to arrive at the conclusion that the stock was a good buy. Luckily for financial professionals, most people are financially illiterate. Otherwise, people like the Plain Bagel and myself wouldn't have a job. Anyway, good luck!

Politicians promise fixed retirement salaries and any unfunded liabilities fall on the taxpayer. The math simply doesn't work.
