  10. I'm English too (born 1974). I always "cleaned" my teeth, rather than "brushed" my teeth. Likewise, I have no memory of mouthwash or flossing until many years later (late 90s, early 00s, perhaps). I guess we were less fussy in those days!

He woke up next morning horribly thirsty and found a large, refreshing looking glass of orange juice next to his bed, which he swigged down...unfortunately, it was actually 10% OJ and 90% vodka which had been prepared especially for him!

  19. I had a toy robot very similar to the one in the vid! It shot sparks out of its chest...I guess it worked in a similar way to a cigarette lighter. It was probably a horrible fire hazard, but no-one seemed to worry about that sort of thing so much back then!

I think maybe one of the reasons why Soviet guitars didn't sound so good was the unavailability of so-called "tone woods"...Western electric guitars are generally made with woods like maple and rosewood, which apparently have good acoustic qualities.

  23.  @paulohagan3309  Wow! Really? What kind of gas was running through those pipes? It must have contained ethylene, or something similar in order to give a "high", I think... In similar vein, I heard that kids in southern Africa discovered that well-rotted sewage also exuded ethylene, that they could "huff" for a cheap high.

  25.  @paulohagan3309  Well, I'm certainly no chemist, so I can't really comment on the interaction between buttermilk and methane...I suppose it's not beyond the realms of possibility that it might get converted into psychoactive. The smoking of banana skins was a popular story for getting a "high" when I was at school (30 years ago). I never tried it, personally...

  26.  @paulohagan3309  Thanks for the link...I'd actually heard this hypothesis about the Oracle of Delphi being attributed to getting high on ethylene before. Personally, I think a lot of ancient "mystical" experiences were probably due to getting high on one substance or another!

I gave up smoking decades ago (and I'm damned glad I did), but as I recall the cigarette "hierarchy" in the UK (from worst to best) was: "Triumph", "Lambert and Butler", "Benson and Hedges", "Silk Cut", "Marlborough", "Camel" and "Dunhill". Occasionally, we got hold of French cigarettes called "Gitanes"...they were horrible to smoke, but considered very "bohemian" and "classy".

  32.  @bat9056  I'm not suggesting that we seek "self-sufficiency"...I think this is an unrealistic aim for the UK. However, to seek "total-dependency" doesn't strike me as a particularly good idea, either...especially when you consider how dependent the UK already is on imports in other sectors besides agriculture.
