  3. Hyundai/Kia’s progress over the last decade or so is pretty incredible. So much respect for their growth and accomplishment. The styling of this new Elantra isn’t to my personal taste, but I applaud Hyundai for taking risks. If I was looking for a new car for around this price range, my choice would actually probably be right next to this on the dealer lot, though - Veloster R-Spec! You’d enjoy it. See if McGovern has one in stock!

Seattle Cars and Coffee’s on Lake Washington, so I’ll either go south to Seward Park and go up Lake Washington Blvd, or go north to the Montlake Cut and go down Lake Washington Blvd. Always a pretty drive, but really gotta respect the cyclists, especially on Sunday mornings.

  15. With some of Mercedes and BMW’s recent designs, I’ve been appreciating Audi’s evolutionary and conservative exterior aesthetic more and more lately. Excellent color palettes on many of their models, too, and love that this example still has the aluminum accents instead of a black optic package.

I appreciate the conservative exterior and I like some of the powertrain tech like the mild hybrid system and rear steering, but honestly, the interior tech has just gotten to be too much for my taste. That gauge cluster especially could have been better implemented. At least there’s still a V8 for now, though.

  19. Yes, that EJ is almost as old as I am, but I still love it. Love how Subaru hasn’t smoothed over all of the rough edges of the STI. It’s definitely been refined over the years, but they haven’t just engineered out all of the quirks and personality. Hope the next gen WRX/STI retain this same character.

  32. I will say - it’s nice to see some more experienced automakers like Audi tackling EV’s in a more traditional way. The build quality of this alone would draw me to it over any Tesla. I don’t mind the classic Audi styling overall, but those they’re shooting themselves in the foot in terms of interior aging with those dual touchscreens. But they probably figure these things are leased anyway. In terms of EV’s in general, yes, they make a lot of sense as daily drivers given the way 99% of people drive so long as the range is adequate. But as fun enthusiast cars driven to be enjoyed, I’m still not quite convinced. I need more than just instant torque and extremely flat handling to enjoy a driving experience. If one day I HAD to have an electric daily driver and a second fun gas car, though, I’d do it.

I’d also be curious for someone to do a fuel economy experiment on one of these 7MT models on the same highway route, one way staying in 6th and the other using 7th, to see how much the 7th gear actually yields in increased efficiency.

  44. I’ve read a bit about this in this book I’ve just finished, and there are definitely some...questionable ethics when it comes to speeding tickets and traffic law enforcement. There’s a strong case to be made that it’s more about profitability and revenue than actual safety. The same can be said of self-driving cars, but that’s a whole other rabbit hole I won’t go down here. Particularly during the pandemic, there have been sooooooooooo many cops out waiting to catch people.

  49. Fun fact - A big part of how FCA gets away with building shitloads of Hemi V8 monsters like this is by buying Tesla’s ZEV credits since Tesla is in such good graces of the EPA regulations. So as long as it’s more economical and viable for them to do that than to redesign their engines and platforms, I think we’ll see more FCA vehicles like these.
