  6. Jatischar there would be harm. You forget that just 30 years ago the Baltics were colonized and imperialized by Russia via the Soviet Union. Through the Russian speakers, Putin is exporting soft power that pushes his crooked agenda into Baltic politics.

  7. gantulga ganhuyag because 30 years ago it was the opposite. Soviet exported the Russian language and Russian culture in their conquest of the Baltics. Now Putin is doing the same thing, using the Russian speakers as useful idiots to sow discord and chaos throughout the Baltics. The solution therefore is to discourage Russian language and discourage Putin's soft power. The only way to do this is to bring Russian speakers into the fold.

  21. Eli you should consider the alternative to the Iraq War. It's hard to believe but remember that life under Saddam was hell. He was waging genocide against the Kurds. And now, Iraqi Kurdistan is one of the safest and most liberal places in the Middle East thanks to the Iraq War. Most of Iraq is relatively safe from ISIS, and the lives of people have improved. There were positives to the Iraq War.

  25. Evgeniy Bezludnyy The problem with that in my opinion is that the ethnic Russian or Russian speakers are not acting rational. Despite not being Russian citizens, and despite Putin being an oppressive dictator, they tend to idolize Putin and view him as their leader. Putin could exploit these people and directly manipulate their political, democratically elected leaders. This Putin group is viewed as a subversion of their sovereignty and of rational democratic concerns from the rest of the population. Not being able to speak the native language also leaves the ethnic Russians disadvantaged in society, regardless of any legal policy. As a result, the Baltic authorities feel that the best way to cut off this Russian influence is to assimilate the ethnic Russians and to stamp out the Russian language and maybe even the Russian identity. It may be heavy-handed, but there are no apparent alternative solutions.

And given their hacking of the US and EU Election, and their incursions into Ukraine, you can understand why the Baltic countries are nervous about any useful idiots within their borders. Besides, Russia does not care about human rights, Putin has no noble goal. If Putin truly cared about human rights, Putin would start by improving the lives of Russians within Russia. Not by threatening Eastern Europe.
