@aliasfred Did it also have a Muncie or Saginaw 3-speed? snicker Oh those were fun to drive!
3
@alexstromberg7696 Only if it's stock! snicker the 383 I had was putting out at least 1HP per cubic inch, possibly moar.
3
@aliasfred THM 350's weren't the greatest for towing but would be sufficient with that setup. The granny gear on the Muncie 465 I had was perfect for towing, but you could only cruise around 55-60 without rapping at the aftermarket tach. Then again, mine was sleeper w/ a 383 & Edelbrock top end & the polished aluminum valve covers and air cleaner. I was even running Delco Rapidfires which were, fun fact, engineered for the strip after Delco reps asked why rodders were filing down the electrodes on their conventional plugs. I'm pretty sure it the gears were stock, and was going to leave it like that, instead adding a UD/OD to the tailshaft of the trans. Or at least, that woulda been the next thing if an idiot (ex)friend didn't blow the motor...

I LOVE how your customers seem to always choose wisely! One broken mount now, if left unattended equals lots of broken stuff later on.
3
@iHelpSolveIt Funny thing about thermal paste; it can't do it's job if it's not there... If it was a heatsink for a computer polished to a mirror finish, you could get away without it, but automotive parts makers usually don't go that far. Personally I use the Antec brand nano-diamond compound for everything, including automotive computer components and ignition amplifier modules.
3
@iHelpSolveIt Then you get the geniuses who put WAY too much on there, actually winding up with a layer way too thick that winds up defeating the purpose and causes it to burnout even faster.
3
@jassun681 Be careful not to put on too much because if you do, it can be counter productive. Direct metal to metal contact is always best and thermal paste is just there to fill in the gaps on the microscopic level. In theory, a CPU core and computer heat sink that are both polished to a perfect mirror shine would not require any as there wouldn't be any micro-gaps. If the layer of paste is too thick, it can wind up forming a micrometers thin layer across the whole thing and can reduce thermal effectiveness and the life of the component. tl;dr = a fresh razor blade is your friend when applying it.
3
And now you know WHY I use channel-locks for these kinds of hose clamps. High learning curve, yes, but SO worth the practice!!!
3
Personally I would have used the wiring diagram to match up the colors on the wires in the harness going to the connectors to know for sure which one was which, and THEN worry about physical routing.
3
We're not restless because we're mechanics; we're mechanics BECAUSE we are restless! I was taking things apart and putting them back together long before I ever hit high school, let alone automotive training.
3
On today's episode of Florida-man Ball Z.....
3
Ray's twitter feed notification is now the new 'Doodily doo'...
3
@deborahchesser7375 Make sure to have 'em sign it, too! ....who am I kidding, it'll be on Youtube soon enough! 🤣🤣🤣
3
@GunnerAsch1 IKR??? (lol) But that's not what I was getting at, really. "Re-using cotter pins hurts my soul" was quite literally the very first piece of merch offered on this channel; a founding principle that Ray lives by & will NEVER compromise on! ^.^ I was making light of the fact that: of all the people to lose it, and of all the things for Ray to lose, it HAD to be the Cotter pin master kit!!! LMFAO
3
Unclustering someone else's F***up; that's like half of what we do! The other half is trying to track down our 10mm sockets while waiting on parts...
3
Fun fact about grounding straps; there's usually more than one to include redundancy in case of failure, but can often cause warning lamps to come on (in later model years) when the system detects increased resistance in the affected circuits. Older ones, not so much.... I had an old Volvo that drove around like that for like a year before I noticed it because of how and where it had broken.
3
"Why didn't he just sneak the radiator out without taking apart the intake?" That was the first thing he tried on that other one!
3
talks about nuts on the J hook, neglects to mention the nut workin' on it! 🤣🤣🤣
3
"I'm just going to rotate the tires side to side to even out the wear!" ...he said, knowing full well he ordered six new tires!
3
"Just because it's new, doesn't always mean it's good." I worked at Uh-Oh Zone for a year and I saw it ALL the time!
3
@christianortendahl7537 Depends on how concentrated one makes it. Personally I use 3 scoops instead of the average 2 per pot, and still go through a few pots a day.
3
Note: Even though you can get away without doing it, technically you are supposed to release the wheel from the inside, re-clamp from the outside while mounting and then remount from the inside. Personally, I always felt this to be a waste of time, but some wheel designs out there actually do require this procedure. Usually with run-flats, but I digress.
3
@RainmanRaysRepairs I've seen this same bot on Hoovies Garage, Rebuild Rescue, The Car Wizard and a few others as well. If it was Justin Bieber channel or something, the audience MIGHT be dumb enough to fall for something like that, buuuuut...
3
Those wheel seals are actually pretty easy to do on heavy duty trucks like that, although you might need a 1" gun to get the lugs off. You can PROLLY do it with a 3/4" but definitely save yourself some future headaches and get one of those monsters!
3
Did Ray ever solve the mystery of the April Fools Macbook???
3
@montejones5788 NO No no, you don't use wood instead of the metal plates and bolt on separating sleeve, you use them in addition to them for added stability and support. Worst case scenario, it bottoms out through the wood in places and still braces against solid steel bottom plates.
3
Actually, Ray does have the final say in whether or not he's going to fix something, and actually has, on rare occasion, rejected jobs because the vehicle is either unfixable, the shop can't cover the liability of Ray doing said job, or a combination of the three. Remember that rust bucket work truck where (doo doo DOOO DOOO dooo, F***, even when I'm typing...) the frame was so rusted there was nothing to weld the new support bracket onto? tl;dr = He CAN say no, but rarely ever does.
3
Happens all the time: replacing the radiator made the heater hose coupler the weakest link in the chain.
3
Six months in and he still hasn't hit the door-of-death; the TRUE measure of his success!!! 🤣🤣🤣
3
Why DOES the phone ring in the shop if the service advisors are all up front?
3
Dammit Ray, you just made an @ss out all of us! 🤣🤣🤣 Never assume and NEVER comment out loud how well the job is going. Granted he rarely does the first, but still breaks the cardinal rule fairly regular. (Seriously man, every time you say that, everyone in the audience winces in unison, waiting for the inevitable fail...)
3
You see, that's the definition RIGHT THERE!!! A technician re-reads the manual several time to make sure they don't miss anything whereas a mechanic MIGHT read it once after the fact.
3
@RainmanRaysRepairs I think the REAL reason you wanted your own shop was to have the ability to throw away the empties in any direction you want, whenever you want!
3
@williamwinsor7376 IKR??? Socket, ratchet, wrench, done deal!!! As opposed to needing to adjust the shim pack on each lifter for each cylinder like you do these days...
3
@oldfarthacks No, usually those are found inside the bank accounts of any road worthy BMW owner or between the ears of your average politician!🤣🤣🤣
3
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, all the Pokemon cried and brought Ironman back to life, but nothing they did could bring THIS thing back to life....
3
@@ClassBLiving64 The customer admitting they did so before you inform them that voids the warranty it's all that reason you need. This is why you asked them about installation before telling them that you can't warrant it. I've also had to call other stores in the area to let them know not to warranty a particular customer on their alternator because of this reason.
3
Seriously Ray, disconnecting the battery with the engine running? You SHOULD know better! We, as the audience, have come to expect better from you, and here you are making a rookie mistake. I'd expect this from Caster Troy, but NOT you! Do.....better!
3
I was going to say Rocket Surgeon
3
It's times like these where I'm glad I have 'baby hands'; VERY useful when trying to origami yourself into positions the human body was never meant to bend!
3
Volvo HVAC systems are designed so that if the blower motor resistor goes out, the fan will still work on high and is extra redundancy built into the system.
3
Personally I would have used a vice with the linear impact driver, but that's just because that's how I was taught in school.
3
Distorted nuts? Are you talking about the nut on the compressor or the one workin' on it?🤣🤣🤣
3
Stroke of genius on the part of the manufacturer because they can profit even more selling you an entire drive shaft instead of replacement U-joints. Evil, but smart...
3
Customer also states mechanic is a major weirdo!
3
DUUUUUDE, THE PAINT JOB ON THAT CHARGER ON THE ALIGNMENT RACK!!!
3
@Bill_N_ATX IKR??? I always tell people to not call me 'Sir' because I werk fer a livin', dammit! As opposed to people not born here that are being payed to live here...
3
Audience: "You totally forgot about zip-ties, didn't you?" Ray: "I plead the fifth..."
3
Having a helper guide you up onto the rack is great and all, but you can also use those two convex mirror on the wall to help guide you if one is not available.
3
@MonkeyJedi99 Precisely! In some ways, I envy people raised in Metric based countries because they only have to learn one scale of measurement instead of both. NTM converting the crap back and forth constantly. Funnily enough, many machinists still use thousandths of a inch for reference.
