  40. I have a French sailing yacht, a Beneteau. It is considerably lighter than American and English designs of the same size. This has always been a French design parameter for increased speed in light wind. In Master they comment upon this re Acheron. During the Napoleonic waes The French ships were lighter and shallower draft than the heavy English ships. France is surrounded by shallow water and a French ship could go close in to shore where a deep draft British ship could'nt follow. They also said Acheron was "Yankee built". At that time Consitution and her sisters were being built and they were state of the art with high speed but strong hulls. Russels ship was rather old and out dated.
