  5. The Williams Institute has best effort transgender calculations for the USA and they’re higher than 0.3% double that. Thailand is surely higher than the USA for trans people by any way you want to measure it. The barrier to entry is way lower. There are a few percent of bisexuals that aren’t represented here. Particularly ones that are in opposite sex relationships. What is your reasoning behind your estimates for the rest of the world having half the LGBT people as America and Europe? What’s your source for 2% of LGBT people being in the closet? Just a guess? I don’t disagree that the number of LGBT people is small. I certainly never said it wasn’t small. At the same time I’m sure it’s more than 2% worldwide but probably less than 5%. The closeted and the bisexual and the closeted bisexual are larger than you’d initially imagine. There isn’t a way to get accurate stats at all given how forbidden being gay is in many places in the world. Being gay was just decriminalized in India for crying out loud and that’s a significant fraction of the world’s population. Just because it’s not billions doesn’t mean LGBT equality isn’t important.

  10.  @danielfontes3120  It certainly is not. Trans people have a cultural part of South Asia since antiquity. Kinnar in India and Pakistan, Waria in Indonesia, and Kathoey in Thailand. Look into the history of trans people and you’ll discover that this folkloric logic is vastly mistaken. Sure, some trans people have done sex work and some desperate families have sold their trans and non trans kids into sex work but that is not an explanation. Trans people have and always will exist, and the primary motivation is gender identity.

  11. I wouldn't go to the cheapest SRS surgeon in Thailand but there are many excellent Thai surgeons. Some things just aren't worth saving money on. Go to a good Thai surgeon like Suporn. It's still reasonable and the results are world class.

  12.  @stefansnellgrove  Marci does great work and it's nice that she's in the bay area now. A lot easier to get to than Trinidad, Colorado where she used to be. My wife had SRS with Toby Meltzer in Phoenix. No cost, covered by insurance. If it were me, I'd do my level best to some health insurance coverage that includes this. It's the law in many US states and even plans under the ACA cover it.

  21. Sure, but a large percentage of trans and intersex people do see themselves as male or female. They are not necessarily here to do anything other than to be themselves and if that means they do see themselves as male or female I think we should fully support them in that. We’re all just gendering others by casual visual inspection anyway.

  31. Their terminology is actually in Thai and there is quite a bit lost in translation here. Ladyboy in English in Thailand doesn’t have the same connotations it does in the west. It’s just an easy compound English word for non native English speakers to use that Thai people know you know. Thailand does have a long way to go in many areas, particularly legally but it is simultaneously culturally distinct from the west: Thailand has had a cultural tradition of trans people leading visible public lives for hundreds and hundreds of years, unlike much of the west. Life for ladyboys is in many ways socially superior to the west, particularly in rural places. You’d need to actually go there to understand it. My wife is a Thai trans woman. We live in the US now.
