She says, “We need to make our democracies resilient”. She is absolutely correct on this. Sadly the use of regulatory bodies for (almost) every aspect of life has undermined what government can actually do. EU regulated everything to the point of micromanagement. UK is close behind with de-facto laws crimping anything a government wants to do.

The Belarus tyrant, propped up by his crummy army is pro-Russia. The people will lynch him at the first chance they get. That’s why he wants to keep his army out of Putin’s war.
2
The veterans returning from the war will not allow Ukraine to slip back to ex Soviet ways of corruption and deprivation. I believe the comparison with UK post WW2 is valid.
2
It would be more important to hide the damage if the plane was hit by a bomb. US intelligence (currently) thinks a bomb is more likely.
2
The Biden administration seems to running the same policies as Trump shouts about. Biden does it quietly but the core details are no different.
2
Current estimates are 20,000 foreigners fighting in Ukraine of which 3000 are British. If Ukraine was really losing huge numbers of men, I believe there would be many more reports of these volunteers getting killed. Men are dying but we are not seeing huge numbers. Long May this continue.
2
Russia says roadsides in occupied Ukraine “might be mined” because they don’t have a clue where any of their mines were placed. Their own people regularly get blown up.
2
Silicon Curtain is one of many stunningly good channels on YouTube (and elsewhere). They put the traditional news sources to shame in every respect.
2
The English deep coal mines of South Derbyshire always struggled to be viable. The old pits caused great environmental damage with subsistence and heaps of waste rock. Closure of the old pits led to the resources being open-cast mined. The coal was quickly taken out and the holes filled in again. They proved just how damaging the old methods really were.
2
@FishandHunt Don’t forget Ukraine ripping past the eggshell Russian lines in the north. Russia has taken back less than 1% at massive costs. Then there’s the partisans in Belgorod. Russia can’t even stop probably 1000 men.
2
German people should be chasing their weak politicians into action. Can you imagine what would happen if Russia ever reached Germany? The current government would fall over itself to capitulate.
2
Gundyayev the Patriarch Kirill of Russian Orthodox Church is actually ex KGB and a close ally of Putin and one of the richest oligarchs of Russia. It’s totally to be expected that his church is part of this criminal terrorist state.
2
Hamas is/was an Iran proxy with absolutely zero concern for any civilian life. Israel got sick of playing to Hamas tune and decided to take action in spite of Hamas using undeclared human shields. The West has wrung its hands but is Israel expected to do nothing? Israel fought back HARD and it’s still winning.
2
Just offer the advice politely of course sometimes experience sees things others have not (yet) thought of.
2
I wish the western commentators who viscerally hate Biden (mostly right wing but also hard left) would wake up and stop pretending that Putin and his allies are on their side. They play directly into the hands of mafia monsters.
2
I’m still fuming at BBC for calling Kahovka dam destruction a “collapse”. The evidence for explosive demolition is immense. Sudden deep and wide breach, big blocks shifted, earthquake sensors showed it on the Richter scale, Ukraine side has no access to the dam core and Russia refuses to let independent inspectors look at the site.
2
Erdogan controls the Bosporus and its now obvious the Russian Navy is useless. Play his cards right and Turkey becomes a cantre of gravity for the Black Sea.
2
D-Day began the battle which eventually removed German fascism from Europe. It did nothing to stop Russian fascism under the guise of Stalinism. Followed by the current fascism under Putin. Putin is literally copying the Hitler playbook. He is fully lucid and fully calculating. Just as Hitler was fully lucid with all of his colonial wars and human rights abuses .
2
Russia is about as far to the right as it’s possible to get. Child indoctrination, military youth groups, separation by race, genocide and of course deep corruption. Please be careful about the “Far Right” labels, so often used the largely left leaning legacy media. It’s basically an insult against anyone who refuses to follow their narrative. “Climate Deniers” is another which is especially nasty when useful data that doesn’t fit the narrative is found.
2
Donbas in 2013-14 was a local coup supported by Putin. The people who wanted to become a Russian colony are a small minority. Those in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia who let the Russians through unopposed are an even smaller number. But all of them had wormed into influential positions.
2
Maybe Putin looked at the success of KGB/FSB infiltration into Germany and assumed their military incapability and energy dependence on Russia would cause them to instantly back down when he invaded Ukraine.
2
Common sense is probably THE most important skill for a US President to have. Ben Hodges has it in spades.
2
Regardless of how the Ukraine war ends, Russia will turn even more belligerent. We won, keep going Hoo Ha! We are victims, fight back Hoo Ha! Belarus will be officially annexed. The Baltics will be threatened. Kadurov will fall out of a window.
2
There won’t be a Lek Lowenska because anyone who steps up will end up poisoned like Nevalni.
2
As ever, comments from Vlad are highly valuable and well explained.
2
The Marino Line failed because France stopped at the Belgian border. Not going to the sea was like castle walls going halfway around.
2
Has KGB/FSB stirred up the anti-Jewish sentiment of Dagestan? They do it around the world - why not a test case within Russia?
2
The nook armed warlords never happened after the 1991 Soviet collapse. Yet back then, the military was properly maintained. Today everything is worn out and those nooks almost certainly won’t do the stuff their designers expected.
2
There will be a showdown that Putin cannot win. Unfortunately, what follows could be even worse.
1
Don’t forget Denys Davidov - a native of Crimea.
1
Communisms and Fascism are both statist/socialist systems. They can’t stand each other because both chase the same audience. The mess after WW2 shows how the enemy of my enemy is almost never my friend.
1
UK was bombing civilian targets from the end of 1940 bombed in 1943 technology had reached a point where actual saturation was possible. UK hit Hamburg so hard the city was fire stormed. Regardless of its strategic “benefits” they did that. ANC maintained it to the war end.
1
The OP illustrates exactly why we have this war. Since 1991, Europe and USA (but especially Europe) have fallen over themselves to reap the “peace dividend”. Politics all across the spectrum pushed the lie that wars in Europe could never happen again. It’s never been true and it’s absolutely not true now.
1
BBC Radio 4 had a programme about these deportations which was nothing if not a whitewash of what has really happened. I’m stunned that a supposedly impartial organisation could be so naive. Actually I’m not. BBC is no longer impartial has not been for decades.
1
@luisekjeldsen1515 The difference is that UK bought the weapons. USA could claim no political involvement. Before December 1941, many in USA supported Hitler because he was anti Russia. The States were highly unlikely to support UK any further. Hitler solved problem by declaring war on USA.
1
A beaten Russia will never stop trying to damage Ukraine. I can see a situation like Israel where they have a large active military ready to beat back any incoming threat. Belarus will collapse because the people will realise they can take out the autocrats. What happens then is anyone’s guess. EU will not be ready. Russian Oblasts around Ukraine are likely to align themselves with Ukraine. There is huge potential - the pre 1917 borders went almost to the Caspian Sea.
1
Populism and love of one’s country are both anti woke. Hitler gave the latter a bad name, but today’s leaders know better than that. Woke however, is pernicious and destructive to us all. It’s used to stifle conversation and discussion of the real issues.
1
Hopefully Ukraine will hit back with the brutality that Russia deserves. An outfit that kills its own with sledgehammers cannot be given any quarter. They cannot be trusted.
1
Most politicians respond to what’s in the mainstream media. They fail to realise how the media always has an agenda. Summer 2022, I was listening to the BBC media show (complete with its extremely biassed presenter). They had a British paramedic who had been in Ukraine since the start. He really tore them a new one especially about the Bucha atrocities that are all but ignored. Has anything changed? Dream on.
1
Australia signed the most ridiculous contract for submarines with the French. They got a watered-down third rate product at a first rate price along with a huge lead time. It’s no surprise that a new government cancelled the deal. So what makes us think they get it right with bombers or bullets.
1
Britain got seriously caught out by Hitler. It’s blatantly obvious that Putin is taking the same track. He respects anyone prepared to hit back. He despises those who refuse to have a useful military. Looking at you Germany.
1
Some say that Russia is scared of attack through the various gaps between Europe and European Russia. I think this is a mere excuse. Putin is piqued that Eastern Europe is no longer a satellite of Russia. He wants the empire back under his control and Ukraine is the first brick in the wall.
1
The Kahovka lake was almost certainly ecologically damaging. But simply removing it is even worse. The dry lake bed has become a desert. It had to be refilled as soon as reasonably possible. Hopefully avoiding any means to remove it like the last two were blown up.
1
Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. Winston Churchill There are many more. All excellent.
1
Check out every US president since Reagan. They were all rich going into office but they came out many times richer. Trump actually lost money during his four years. What is going on?
1
The western people supporting “terry purists” (Iran, Hamas, Hesbolla, Russia) are almost entirely hard left. They literally hate Jews so they seem to support anyone who the Jews refuse to be controlled by.
1
Putin and his friends have removed anyone capable of opposing the regime. Then add the poor education and so many in a poor state of health leaves very few to care what happens.
1
There are many ways Biden could get around the Congressional road block. But he just lets it drag out. He’s no better than Johnson or Trump.
1
Pacifism is a silly ideology , because it leads to aggressors just walking in. It is no different to letting the school bully walk over you. You suffer terribly and lose all self-respect or you fight back.
1
Late 1930s were the same. Politicians like Chamberlain chose to ignore the obvious trends in Hitler’s behaviour. Then far too slowly increased military strength. Today, Biden is causing escalation by not allowing a fight-back. Chamberlain made the exact same mistake in 1937. The unintentional consequence was Hitler attacking Western Europe. He had no intention, but the whole lot was effectively gifted to him.
