Politics today always follows the line of least resistance. Margaret Thatcher, UK’s only true leader post WW2, was removed because she really was too good. UK is governed by managers. Chamberlain, Wilson, Heath, Major, Blair, Sunak. They are all the same. Incapable of strategic thinking.
1
Soviets kept prices down of basic food and fuel then prevented the import of anything people want to buy. That’s where the “decadence” of the West came from.
1
The extreme stupidity of Russian leaders makes me wonder how their wobbly edifice has lasted for so long.
1
I hope Ben Hodges’ point about Russian nukes is being conveyed to the US presidential administration. We need to tell Putin to do one and bd prepared to deliver overwhelming responses.
1
I would like to hear more about Donetsk being a “mafia city”. Is that what allowed Russia’s 2014 invasion (sorry) “support for freedom fighters”? Will it become a thorn in Ukraine’s side when it is eventually liberated from Russian control.
1
During WW2 Stalin’s army pre-razed everything ahead of the advancing forces. History blamed Germany for its scorched earth methods. It was actually Stalin just trashing everything and killing everyone.
1
Ukraine leaving its cellphone network at full strength was a master stroke. Everyone else shuts it down from day one.
1
@michaelwilson9921 Putin has been planning to take Ukraine and Moldova (and much of Eastern Europe) since at least 2004. NATO had nothing to do with his ambitions.
1
The political attacks on Trump and the Russian collusion (fully exposed as fake) were all based on assumptions that Russia is far more powerful than they ever were.
1
He does need to end it. But he doesn’t have an excuse. NATO supplied F-16 that hammer his airforce and trenches would be a great excuse. But NATO can’t see it. So Putin probably won’t either.
1
Russia imploding means Ukraine removes Russia from their territory but it also means Russia is bankrupt and unable to pay reparations. Hopefully, the stolen women and children can be returned home.
1
Huge oil and gas reserves were discovered under Donbas and Crimea back in the 2000s. Putin sees them as competition so he’s stepping on them as a mafia Don would “whack” a new competitor setting up nearby.
1
Others don’t want to admit they’ve backed the wrong horse for decades. They will tell us Hitler was a hard right mad man (he was a perfectly lucid socialist) and conveniently ignore the 10x worse crimes of Stalin and the Soviets. They will ignore that British Empire made owning slaves illegal in 1812 yet Soviet Russia could only exist on the backs of slaves. Let’s not mention that inconvenient detail.
1
There was never any doubt that Wagner troops would totally avoid joining the Russian regular army. I also suggest their Belgorod and Rostov locations will never actually close. Why should they?
1
A large majority of Russians are quite happy to turn blind eyes to the fascism and corruption of Russian government. Maybe it’s the useless education they’ve had to endure. But the people are not stupid. Why do they want to be ruled by monsters?
1
@TheJeanette53 Ukraine children and women of child-bearing age have been abducted and (at best) subjected to forced indoctrination. At worst who knows what happens to them. When these are your people you fight. Those who can’t see the point of fighting are little better than the criminals doing theses crimes.
1
EU is built around the Common Agricultural Policy put in place to support the notoriously inefficient French farmers. Ukraine agriculture output was more than half of the EU output. EU can’t accommodate a shift of that size.
1
Biden could get aid to Ukraine by different means. But he seems to prefer that Trump stalls the legislation. Is there really any difference between Biden and Trump?
1
Putin propaganda claims the Russian speakers of Ukraine were oppressed. The viscous reality of his war will leave those very people feeling cursed. They will drop their native language for Ukrainian.
1
He says it seems far fetched but if it’s 50% true the animal is incredibly dangerous. However, the sad fact is the only real counter to this evil is USA. They went over the top with the McCarthyism purged then backed off and still have not appreciated just what we are facing.
1
Political right and political left are two sides of a clock. Far Right and Far Left sit side by side at 6 o’clock. Both are totalitarian with no difference between them. Please do not equate Brexiteers with “Far Right. They are conservatives to the right of centre. They are not even close to the bottom of the clock.
1
Hopefully Biden continues to use the power of US $ and the huge US military industry to grind Putin and his machinery into a pulp. Stopping his mafia will be another matter entirely.
1
I always say we have this war entirely because we appeased Putin. Similar fools led to WW2. Do we really want that?
1
I’m very concerned about USA. The political (lawfare) indictment of Donald Trump is a tremendous mistake by the US Left. It’s making him a victim and boosting political fragmentation. It’s also massively recruiting support for Trump. We who support Ukraine need to get through to him. We need him to appreciate the reality of what’s going on, because he may well win the next presidency and USA is the only country with the power to stop this war.
1
Men have always been the top controllers because that’s been the way it’s always been done. That does not mean that all men are potential despots. If you think it means that women are incapable then check out Kim’s sister in North Korea. She makes fat boy look like a nice guy.
1
BBC only recently stopped parroting Russian propaganda as impartial news. A presenter on Radio 4 was dumbfounded when an aid worker called out the double standards. BBC has improved but serious coverage of the war is weak to say the least.
1
Biden wanted to send more materiel. Congress dithered. The duopoly goes both ways.
1
General Ben Hodges said the Russian oil assets are absolutely military targets. He sounded disgusted with the Biden Administration.
1
The Tzar sent his navy all the way from St Petersburg to Japan and they got absolutely hammered. Poor seamanship poor leadership poor quality ships were only part of the story. Nearly 150 years later nothing has changed.
1
Biden is little better than Trump. He’s just less noisy.
1
British and US forces attack at night with night vision equipment. This gives them a significant edge against the enemy.
1
A week after the Kakhovka Dam was blown up, BBC was saying, “Ukraine and Russia are blaming the other side for the dam’s collapse“. They chose to omit the evidence available even the that Russia has done it.
1
Many months ago the BBC Radio 4 Media Show had one of their regular reporters calling them out for parroting Russian propaganda. He had seen the mass graves and was extremely angry. The (always leftist) presenter had no answer. I doubt the reporter has had anything broadcast by BBC since then.
1
The BBC is the broadcast arm of the Guardian newspaper. They get all the easy supportive questions, while everyone else is ignored or painted as “right wing extremist”. Whatever that is
1
The Billions thrown at Orban is EU money. There are strings attache. If it ever gets paid, the real beneficiaries will be French and German with a few crumbs going elsewhere and Hungary getting some roads to nowhere. The Heads of the Valleys Road in Wales, UK is a perfect example. It has taken decades to build with huge excess costs almost exclusively due to cumbersome EU bureaucracy. In the meantime, the whole area has become economically irrelevant. Its reason to exist (coal mines and steel works) are long gone.
1
Russians are already leaving Georgia. They won’t be waiting for irrefutable evidence.
1
UK political leadership has been weak since at least the mid 1960s. Wilson was almost certainly captured by communist theology if not an actual Russian agent. Heath was simply weak. He refused to take the obvious economic decisions. Callaghan was no better. Thatcher put her foot down and made the necessary decisions to escape from extreme socialism. Major was another middle management drone. He did nothing useful. Blair did everything possible to expand the state and break up the country. Brown was just another socialist who talked down the economy. Cameron, May and Sunak were again doing nothing despite having large parliamentary advantages. Johnson tried but even he signed up to an unnecessary deal with Europe. Truss tried to make Thatcher style changes but had no clue how to do it and got tipped out in a few weeks. We now have Keir continuing where Blair left off. They are building a Giovani Gentile style fascist system of top-down state control that literally sidelines government. Much like Canada and exactly how the EU is run. Unelected officials make the laws.
1
Palestine is a separate issue used by Putin (supported by his trolls) to divert attention from Ukraine. It worked but western politicians are now waking up to reality.
1
Musk is constantly hammered by the Wokes who hate that he’s killing their global warming bogeyman. They hate Putin because he’s nasty. But they conveniently ignore the Biden misdemeanours. Musk is misguided over Ukraine but he’s (usually) no fool. Zelenski should talk to him. They are both on the same side. Maybe retired officials like David Patreus or generals like Ben Hodges can get the point across. Hodges is especially compelling.
1
The US and NATO establishment don’t want Ukraine to win. Their only concern is to not look responsible for the failure
1
The Imperial tzars used indentured peasants/serfs aka slaves. The Soviets used the Gulags as slave labour. Their systems could not exist without extreme cheap labour. Putin is trying to run the country without obvious use of slaves but this war (human waves) has exposed the reality.
1
Biden failed to achieve the full use of Russian money in western banks because he did not even concern himself. EU was brought kicking & pushing to use the bank interest on the money. Biden still did next to nothing regards that money. Trump is still keeping us guessing but he gets stuff done.
1
It’s significant that the areas of Ukraine invaded are all home to recently discovered oil and gas reserves. It’s highly likely that Putin wanted that competition stopped. Just as he’s done with the various “…stans” they had to be slapped down.
1
It’s extremely difficult to find a reliable history of Russia that doesn’t contradict itself. Putin’s claim of a 1000 years “reich” is part of that distortion. Yet another idea stolen from Hitler.
1
Fatherland, Motherland, what’s the difference?
1
I believe Ukraine will become a prosperous country over the long run. They are incredibly inventive and the country is blessed with natural resources. Putin wants none of that. He simply wants to control the territory.
1
The mask has slipped from the Biden administration. Functionally no different to trump on Ukraine.
1
A true vertical regime is like one tent. The Russian regime is many tents all fighting for ground space to put their pegs and guy ropes.
1
Absolutely but I suspect this is an afterthought caused by their failure to take Ukraine in 2022.
1
Putin the man is incredibly boring as was his forbear from 1930s Germany. What they cause(d) to happen is another matter.
