  4.  @metaphorpritam  guilds didn't have the form or function of a caste, so lose the whataboutism, silly. Guilds were decentralized corporations and/or legal cartels (some had private armies) and back in the days they were common anti-competitive practices were often tollerated. In many towns it was near impossible to open up certain kinds of shops since all the suppliers/buyers signed contracts saying they'd only do business with members of the guild.

  17. To be fair, most countries were slightly socialist at the time. Where I'm from we lost big on a railroad bubble. The local newspapers argued the rails should be nationalized not because private rail companies were bad but because rails were risky and hugely expensive and that was something all these local rail firms couldn't do. They said it was best for everyone for the guys with the deepest pockets to bear the risk. What they wanted sorta happened as now a half dozen mega-corporations own the rails.
