  21.  @awangbelantara9644  The US and UK wanted India to resolve the Goa issue peacefully through dialogue with Portugal and not through an armed conflict. India took it to the UN security council and the US said it would not support an armed conflict but a resolution through peaceful means. Fearing that such a move would encourage other countries to simply invade their neighbors. The USSR said that its not up to the UN security Council. The USSR doesn't mind other countries invading each other because it is their own hegemonic doctrine. They criticized the wests colonial past but never mention that they are a land based colonial empire that plunders resources themselves. How do you think Russia got so big? USSR supported India because it was in their own interests. International law is based on norms and norms are merely status quo expectations, self enforced. If its normal that countries can simply invade other countries, it will become the norm, thus accepted. Im not saying that India didnt have the right to Goa, im just saying that supporting India's right to invade it by force is a different issue. This also came at a time when India were lecturing the world about morality and peace. Then at a drop of a hat, invaded a territory that has been established for 450 years most of that was before India even was a country. Again, Goa should have been given back to India, and perhaps even force was necessary, im just saying that dont expect the west to support armed invasions, thats all.
