Ian really seems like a good egg who doesn't take himself too seriously.
29
"It doesn't work like that!" But...it does work like that.😕
29
I don't recall seeing Ian quite so uncomfortable with a gun. I hope to try my friend's gun soon.
28
Came for the gun, stayed for the history. Looking forward to tomorrow!
27
@alun7006 Yep. That's why SMGs are often the first weapons produced by a budding arms industry.
27
I first expected this to be a Weapons and War alert. The explanation of M1/M2 carbine distinction was an unexpected bonus. Thanks!
27
Same with the M9's original parkerized (per gov't spec) magazines. New slick finishes solved that problem.
26
Heh. A swelled head from a great group is like instant grit in the lockwork...This is why I'm so tempted to pack up and go home after that 'really GOOD' shot... :p I know what's coming next.
26
Would a heavier barrel make a difference? The thin barrel was one of the first things I noticed in yesterday's table-top.
26
When my brain quit twisting at the sight of the trigger and upside down shotgun, it really does look ingeniously simple!
26
Beaux-galeau, mon ami...
25
Beautiful, well cared-for rifle. There's just something about milled steel and good wood. Considering the wear on the internals, it looks like it was also enjoyed on the range.
25
Thanks! It's enlightening to see how everything goes together. Even though I have an M18 clone, with thumb safety, this was still a good watch. I do wonder, though, how many springs got launched during the building of this gun. 🤔😜
24
Good ramble! The history is what gives these guns value.
24
Somehow, it's easy to see these being transferred to nearby infantry units...sometime after midnight...
23
N A ... were ... ;)
23
Good job! You kept the guy with the pan and spoon busy!😜 That looks about ideal for the PDW niche, if pistol caliber is acceptable. A unicorn for me.
23
The Marine Corps' 13-man squad is intended to be deployed as 3, 4-man fire teams. Since this can provide a larger base of fire--two teams firing with one team maneuvering--two IARs are considered as effective as one SAW for fire suppression.
23
From following discussions elsewhere, the age of a particular gun was also an issue. Soldiers who used new guns swore by it; those who got worn ones swore AT it...
22
There is also that Russian proverb; 'The best is the enemy of good enough'--especially with the enemy on your porch.
22
Enlightenment happens! Thanks! I worked for a milsurp distributor back in the '90s, and wondered about the abundance of inexpensive Lugers. This clears it up.
22
I dunno. While not Jerry Miculek, Ian gets quite a bit of practice; he's come a long way since he fell in with this crowd.
21
By the end of the war, German armor had a tendency to shatter when hit, even if not penetrated.
21
Regarding the 'Old West', that culture and lifestyle actually persisted into the 1930s.
21
It's cool to hear the 'D' drop in and out of Ian's pronunciation of 'Madsen'. It shows that he's a regular guy and not a pure academic. 😎
21
Finally seeing this in 2020, through a MHI fan page on Facebook. Good overview, though Ian did miss the overbearing, paranoid gov't agency. Eight years on, and the younger Ian sounds almost like a kid...😄
21
It's great that YouTube quickly sorted themselves out about showing happy* videos! *well, full-auto 😎
20
@godemperormeow8591 After following Forgotten Weapons for several years now, I've come to appreciate the creativity and engenuity French small arms designers used for their small arms designed, and miss them. The small arms world has become essentially reduced to AR and AK derivatives.
19
Thank you, Ian for a very enlightening video! This kind of material is what this channel is all about!
19
Bloke's breathing quickens...
19
My first thought when Ian pointed out that monolithic upper was that getting to the barrel and gas system has to be a pain. Pity the engineers didn't get a little input from the users.
18
@ArcturusOTE New and rare, plus knowing how to bash the AR/SCAR parts together, with neat gas system. EDIT: In Bloke's video, he mentions a price range comparable to European ARs, but I'm not sure how that translates to US prices.
18
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I thought 'I get to watch Ian jump into a pit of hungry alligators!' ETA: As you so often point out, ALL new designs have teething problems, that somehow slip past even the most detailed, dedicated testing and QC.
17
Ingenious! No love for lefties, though.
17
@someweirdguyew9757 Note he also used it at Desert Brutality...I rather doubt he'd do that with a loaner. 😎
17
@lairdcummings9092 I was thinking the same thing--running a Maxim with black powder would be a sight to see!
17
As far as being 'too accurate', no matter how mechanically accurate a gun is, the bouncing around in full auto guarantees decent dispersion of fire. AND, the ability to place precise single shots is always a good thing in combat.
17
The action is truly elegant in its simplicity. The ring/trigger setup looks to me like a European version of 'hammer fanning'.
17
Yep, it would quickly tear up leather. It was most likely carried in a custom case, being a target pistol.
16
Good point! I was thinking about the ease of loading the cartridge. With a traditional breech, it looks to be a bit awkward to line the round up and shove it in with the gun elevated. I've seen where many guns have to be depressed to a loading position, then re-elevated to fire.
16
"Hey, Ian! How qbout a shooting video?" "Go right ahead..."
16
Not surprising, considering the Beretta is essentially a refinement of a Walther design (the P.38)
15
I kind of expected him to mention using a B-M in competition.
15
@TheRedneckPreppy Indeed! 😎 But the run would still be epic, and to see him do a reload...🧐
15
I remember a bit of mind-bending when I first saw a water-cooled .50... I wish you had gone a bit into the cooling system; was there an evaporator can on the mount??
15
If you absolutely have to have a unique 1911... At 1400m, volley fire would be hilarious; the terminal effect would probably be a bit like thrown gravel.
15
I think the military missed a beat when they used the same grip frame for the M18. When I heard 'compact', I thought the grip should have been a bit shorter for concealability, even if it meant giving up a couple of rounds. ---- As an aside, Ian, would you consider doing an episode on the development of the Kel-Tec P-11, since that was the original 'chassis-in-grip frame' pistol? While Sig has greatly refined the concept, they were not the first.
15
Who doesn't have a gun to hand when watching creepy movies?
14
Then they get blasted back a step--'Oh...'
14
True, overall. But when a tank is shooting at you, you're down to seconds.
