In fact, many economists and scientists point out that the raw materials to replace the entire fleet of cars with EVs simply doesn't exist. So what are we being sold with EVs?

  21.  @petergosney6433  Since EV and Gasoline powered cars are generally made by the same car makers, wouldn't you could "bailouts" for both? And no, EVs are getting special tax breaks. Studies in the US indicate that EVs are getting a hidden subsidy of around $50K per vehicle. That does not count the up-front subsidies from the federal government nor does it count multiple states that don't charge sales tax on EVs or plug in hybrids.

  22.  @petergosney6433  Yes, GM and Chrysler got bailouts but they're the same companies making EVs (also the federal government screwed the GM bondholder out of their money) Ford did not receive a bailout in 2009. They had competent leadership at the time and opened lines of credits with multiple banks to get them through the crisis. The only reason companies like GM and Ford are making EVs at all is because the EVs have significant subsidies in the form of low or no cost loans and outright subsidies that people have valued at up to $50K per car. If you look at their balance sheet, even with massive subsidies EVs are dragging down profits from gas powered cars.

I saw an analysis on X from a self-described branding expert, and his belief was that Jaguar is trying to move upscale into the $125-250K (USD) market, but the issue is that they have no cars to show. He said it shows that Jaguar believes people with the income levels who can afford that type of car will view the gender-queer lifestyle as edgy and brave and will be attracted to the brand. Of course, had he done it in 2020 it might've made some sense, but Wokeism is now considered toxic, meaning that Jaguar is now as edgy as a 1963 VW Beetle.

  26. EV crazies believe Lithium Batteries are a game changer, and people who aren't fans agree with them: While they certainly made EVs marginally useful, they also have such large downsides in terms of safety and cost that they seem to be the reason why EV sales have plateaued.

You need a modified drive train that will allow the electrical motors to interact with the gas powered drive train, you need a smaller lithium battery (which has the same drawback as larger lithium batteries) and when that battery fails, your car, depending on model won't work.

  28.  @不死鳥-u4e  Toyota hybrids still has a transmission called the Hybrid Synergy Drive and still uses a planetary gearset, which is similar to a CVT. So you still have the complexity of the battery and gas engine but when the battery goes bad (and it will), the car won't work. And for very little gain. Just get the gas powered car and you'll get a Toyota that will work for 20 years with only routine maintenance.

So here's your homework assignment: 1) Find out how much copper does an EV require in total pounds 2) Find out how much copper is used a year already 3) Multiply the replacement of all cars in the US (I'll give you a hint, the US has 250M cars) 4) And then get back to us on how many additional tons of copper need to be mined. I've done the calculation, but I want to see if you'll get away from your feelings on this matter and get into data and facts. *here a hint: there are 183 pounds of copper in an EV. vs on average 25 pounds of copper in a normal car.

  32. Hybrids introduce even more complexity that is the bane of longevity in a car. I'll say it over and over again .... in the US the cost of gas (petrol) is only the 3rd largest cost of ownership (about $1000/driver in the US), so the minimal gas savings won't make up for the initial outlay unless you own the car for 9-10 years. And unless it's a Japanese car, the hybrid part will probably break in the meantime.

Their polestar cars are nice, but they have really terrible range, and they're too expensive. There's been a lot of press about it; surely you've read about it.

Gas cars generally only catch fire as they older and are poorly maintained. But a household fire extinguisher can be used very effectively on this type of fire. Almost all of these fires can be attributed to the fuel system leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Lithium fires burn at roughly 5.5 times as much heat (3800 C) which is enough to melt steel. They produce their own oxygen, and there's no practical way to put one out. Some lithium fires have started simply because of poor manufacturing, and others as slight damage occurs (as when you run over a deep pothole). So while your facts are correct in the X axis (likelihood of fire), you missed the Y axis which would measure the impact of the fire

  39. Even if there's not enough electricity to power the buses, isn't it the thought that counts? They were trying to do the right thing, and sure, the kids can't use them, but they did get a bunch of diesel buses off the road, and that will surely save the planet. Plus the kids could use some exercise walking to school. A win-win, right?

  40. I tend to agree with him. It will take EVs too long to wait for new battery technology that has to have at least a 3-5x the energy density of today's battery and doesn't require the caution that you have to treat today's batteries. For every person saying "EV batteries are fine" there are four more saying it's unacceptable. And trying to predict technology 10 years from now is a fool's game. We have no idea if batteries can get significantly better in 10 years, and we have no idea what alternative technologies will be better than battery powered cars. Which why I find it weird that EV fanatics don't hope for something better; significantly better batteries, significantly better internal combustion engines, less government intrusion on consumer choices. It reminds me of the old iPhone/Android arguments that used to break out online a decade ago.

  46.  @jamesf3683  A study in the Wall Street Journal said that for an EV battery to make up the CO2 needed to make it, it would have to last 75 years. Now, my take is CO2 is not a pollutant, so it's not relevant. In the end, I like the concept of EVs, but government mandates for EVs are definitely a fraud meant to shift money from consumers to the rich people who influence the government. Those EV mandates will shortly be gone in the US.

  47.  @jamesf3683  Just filled up. Gas at 2.70 US a gallon. Gas prices vary across the US depending on how far they are from a refinery or distribution point. Near cities it's cheaper because of the amount of distributors. If you're 100 miles into the wilderness, gas might cost you $4-5 a gallon because of the transportation cost. I realize if you're from England that might not be a thing.

There is a video on the YouTube where a Tesla fell into the water and it was burning underwater. Imagine what that would do if you parked it in your garage and it caught fire, or if you were stuck in a car like that after an accident. Your body would be ashes, even your relatives couldn't bury a body.

  49.  @tigertoo01  The warranty doesn't cover the cost of a battery damaged in an accident. EV insurance premiums are expensive because they're written off with only minor damage because the battery cannot be assessed after an accident, so they must assume the battery is no longer good.
