  11. The CEO should have been fired last fall when he pushed a direction for the company that made no sense. EVs requires a paradigm change for their customers, and was dependent on public chargers be an order of magnitude more common then they actually were.

  14.  @Goodnessandlove  The basic concept of EV is still the same as Gustave Trouvé's tricycle built in 1881. Electric cars were abandoned in the early 20th century because they didn't have enough range, and gas cars had far more utility. They quickly went away.

  15. I have been in a polestar car, really beautiful car inside and out... with a range of about 230 miles and a price of $65K, which is a shame. Too expensive, and too limited.

Not even one stint with that kind of range. Then I have to sit around for what.... 90 minutes? By comparison, the SUV will go about 500 miles, get 25 MPG, meaning we can make it 1/3 of the way across the country, then settle in at our hotel. But to the topic at hand, the Polestar falls into that range where it's too expensive for the core functionality it provides. Sure, it has really great Scandinavian design, brilliant controls, passable shape, but why would I pay $65K for such a limited car? If it were a gas powered car, it would be selling for 1/3 less. So as a consumer, there really is only one rational choice, and it's not the Polestar, as much as I like the interior.

  20. Well, not exactly. You can't have nice things unless you're willing to afford the owner of the charging station a margin so he can both make a profit and allow him to cover maintenance costs. Otherwise what you're seeking is government ownership which means everyone will pay taxes for to subsidize you, and you'll still pay the government margins because government is highly inefficient compared to private industry.

  21.  @stuartburns8657  They actually are able to pump fuel since anything more than a mom-and-pop has a large generator to not just run the pumps and lights, but most gas stations are mini-markets so it keeps the freezers going as well.

  23. Net Zero is a tricky phrase. It doesn't mean that there is no carbon released, it means that you pay a company that buys land in the Amazon, and they promise (really really promise) that they'll always keep it forested, offsetting any carbon released (let's not delve into why carbon is essential to life on the planet). My only real concern about this scam is I didn't think of it myself.

The zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate unveiled today (28 September 2023) means the country will have the most ambitious regulatory framework for the switch to electric vehicles (EVs) in the world. This requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035. The 2035 end of sale date puts the UK in line with other major global economies, including France, Germany, Sweden and Canada.

  30.  @geirvinje2556  Well, most of what people are referring as "subsides" are really tax deductions. Most of which accrue to any business. One unique set of deductions for mining and oil is the the depletion allowance, which is predicated that as you mine copper ore or extract crude oil, some of your asset is depleted. What people refer to as egregious was that originally this depletion allowance allowed large companies deduct 28% of their revenue for depletion. Today, the most egregious deductions are limited to small producers and those who don't own their own refining business. The way you get cars written off quickly is to have insurance that pays for rental cars while waiting for the rebuild. But they sell it to third parties who then fix the car and get it back on the road, so the insurance company is made whole, and the rebuilder makes some money as well. Nothing similar is done for damaged EV batteries. They're just dragged to the scrap yard.

That is exactly the 100-year average. During the preceding decade, 1991-2000, 6 major hurricanes struck the United States. That is below the 100-year average. During the decade 1981-1990, 4 major hurricanes struck the United States. That is substantially below the 100-year average, and ties the least number of major hurricanes on record.

  35.  @yxxtower  Of course, but the idea that people who have electric cars should get a break somehow on insurance is rather silly. As you say, EV insurance rates are based on risk, and by the same thought process, their actuaries have weighed the risks and decided EV owners should pay more. And again, they raise the rates of normal car insurance because the cost of at-fault accidents for a normal car go up because the cost of repairing EVs is higher. So from a TCO perspective, the additional cost of insurance should be factored into the cost of an EV.

  36.  @richardwendt9266  It's not "my" fears it's an issue with EVs. And the only way to remove the big problem with EVs is to get rid of Lithium batteries entirely while doubling range. At some point that will happen. But it may not be in your or my lifetime.

Those cars have Spotify connections btw, and full heat on, so their drivers are in their t-shirts going 80 MPH down the freeway despite the cold weather. You're turning down the heat in your battery car so you can make it to the next charging station.

  46. Depreciation has always been the Achilles heel of these cars. Consumer Reports (A popular consumer non-profit testing organization) has been an advocate of leasing EV for the last several years primarily because these cars are so electronics/software dependent that even if the Tesla of today looks like the Tesla of 10 years ago, there are profound differences in electronics & software that make a significant difference so that you never want an EV more than 3 years old.

  47.  @j17golf  well, it's one models out of 100's of models Toyota makes and sells around the globe. And that doesn't include Daihatsu and Hino. Most of their electrification is in hybrid models, which today make more sense for people who want some form of electrification without most of the downsides of full EV.

  48.  @j17golf  Third world countries use very up-to-date telecommunications tech. Apparently you've not traveled very much. They tend to be very practical and don't have the luxury beliefs that left-handed people have in rich countries. But they avoid EVs because they're a toy. And in many of these countries, the cost of propane is so cheap that it would be foolish not to use; and as a bonus propane burns cleanly and is less polluting than an EV.

In fact, if EV owners really wanted to save the planet, they get rid of the battery in the floor, and use their feet to propel the car like that cartoon "The Flintstones". While that sounds like a joke, that's exactly what "net zero" means.
