Stallantis is struggling because their prices are too high, and they're pushing EVs over the cars that people actually want.
7
He neglected to point out from the article that the trucking companies using EVs are putting huge surcharges on top of fees for using EVs making the price of goods and services even more expensive for everybody.
7
@user-ee9cz6mc1x Yes, everyone who disagrees with you is being paid by someone else to oppose you. They're probably waiting in a car outside your flat waiting to engage you in an argument as soon as you leave for work.
7
@patrickpanhuysen9618 None. That's the point.
7
@QIKUGAMES-QIKU Do you want to race him on a 700 km long race?
7
@JoeOvercoat Request denied. I will be jetting all over the planet for the forseeable future.
7
The EU just approved the use of bugs in food.
7
@tigertoo01 You might turn your own advice around and be embarrassed that you're making yourself look foolish
7
@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 Most real estimates say that regular cars and trucks will be the primary source of transportation through the 2050's, and we'll be dependent on oil/gas until the 22nd century. This is an application of practical thinking
7
If it was really better, you'd buy it without government subsidies. Perfect example is cell phones. Even though they're far more expensive than land lines, people buy cell phones for $1K a pop, pay $150 a month to use them, and the.... get this... they continue to pay $1K a pop every 3 years to get the latest ones. Because they're demonstrably better in every way.
7
EV’s are way overpriced, have absolutely no resale value, require an endless supply of patience and are impossible to repair and virtually impossible to insure Aside from that, it's shocking that everybody isn't clamoring for one.
7
@seannewman5391 Yes, everyone who disagrees with you must be a stooge of big oil or ICE car makers. Because obviously everyone would agree with you about EVs since as you well understand, you are the smartest person you know.
7
@LyuboA He's already said he is, in fact, they're going to sponsor legislation stopping individual states from banning gas/diesel cars.
7
Probably plenty of people objected, but sometimes people keep their head down rather than tell the boss that he's nuts.
7
@PercyPruneMHDOIFandBars These gen-z'ers forget that time is the biggest cost in shipping. It means that it's much more difficult to get vegetables to market when they're still fresh. It means you need to have twice the drivers, it means that you need to have massive charging facilities across thousands of miles of interstates, some of them even without cellular coverage. And the additional weight will push state budgets since roads will wear out faster causing states to raise taxes on trucks as much as 5-10x what they are today.
7
@inverted_real_it_y They're so expensive, and yet most manufacturers are losing huge sums at the price they're selling for at retail.
7
It took ages and some arguing to have it fixed under warranty So much for the theory that you're better off dealing with the manufacturer than the dealer. The dealer has an incentive to get things fixed for you.
6
I argued years ago that Carbon Credits were a scam, and people were outraged. So I asked.... who gets the money from carbon credits? And the answer was "it doesn't matter, it's about externalities". It always matters where the money is going. If it's not going to you, it's a scam.
6
@andrewflies9119 wealthy people buy them to show how much they care about the environment.
6
@badchefi Terrific news. Then we can end subsidies, and since they'll be popular, private industry can pick up the cost of chargers everywhere. After all, Tesla's done it, so it would be embarrassing for the entire EV industry if they go begging the taxpayer to build out the charger network. After all, the government didn't build out the filling station network.
6
@davestvwatching2408 That works for people with garages, what about the majority of people who have street or basement parking in an apartment building?
6
@remakeit2628 It's easy to be "massively up" when you start from such a small number. And normal car sales are not collapsing; the problem right now is makers are subsidizing EV sales by raising the price of gas powered cars, making both EVs and normal cars extremely expensive.
6
@itsMe_TheHerpes Laws are like the seasons, they change all the time. And will.
6
@tigertoo01 why not just accept that she’s put time and effort into studying the affects of climate change is having on our environment Why would we just imagine something to be true, when the facts say otherwise. Unless you're saying that Climate Science is so simple a girl in elementary school can be an expert. You can't have it both ways, either Climate Science requires decades of study in meteorology, statistical methods, and four years of a science undergraduate degree, or you can be autistic girl and become an expert in 3 years as a 13 year old .
6
@ChrisGWarp but Intra city usage is where it excels So... a milk float. I agree. Jolly fun, especially with the little jingle.
6
@jeffsaxton716 They don't. Every gas station has a standby generator to keep the pumps working. At least in the US.
6
@frednone Well this is what you get with open borders.
6
@raypalmer7733 Not so much. Emergency generators will run automatically at least once a week and alert the owner if there is an issue, maintenance is someone coming by twice a year to change the oil and filter.
6
@MrSmithUK Petrol cars don't explode, they burn, and they burn at such a low temperature that a household extinguisher can put them out. EVs cannot be put out once they burn. They simply let it burn itself out.
6
@melissasmess2773 It has not been approved by our FDA
6
That issue already exists with all EVs. Or did you think you can get your Tesla serviced anywhere?
6
@jonfrench7133 looks like you have the same attitude to education Have you considered he actually knows more about EVs than you? That seems far more likely.
6
@jonfrench7133 It doesn't keep me happy, but you're fairly un-knowledgable about engineering and cars specifically. Clarkson is a far better source of information than you. That's not even something worth arguing about.
6
@sdcoinshooter Well, the Teslas are fairly ugly, even if I admire the man who created the first practical EV, Elon Musk. Now, the seamy side of that was that Tesla was built on US Taxpayer subsidies, and they still make a significant part of their margins on money from carbon credits.
6
@vandamonium1731 It had to be sarcasm. Most people understand this is not about cleaner/greener.
6
It's a signal that the demand for EV's has been abated, and that's all people are going to buy. It doesn' t mean EVs are bad per se, but it does mean that spending more on an EV than $25K is not in your best interest. In fact, if you want an EV, you should only buy used with a warranty from the manufacturer. I predicted 5 years ago the market for EVs would top out at 5-7% of the total fleet of cars, and it appears I was being optimistic.
6
To the point of "fuel savings", my spouse tracks all our spending and our joint fuel costs for the year was $2,000. Insurance was more than that. As I keep pointing out, fuel is one of the smallest costs for running a car.
6
@timsbird1971 Lifetime costs for an EV are not well understood (including depreciation), but right now, the better deal is to buy a gas car and keep it 20 years.
6
@williammeek4078 Does the rash of Chevy Volt fires count? Does the woman killed in fiery Tesla crash on Sunset Boulevard count? Does the loss of the car carrier Fremantle Highway count?
5
@JG-us9lu Exactly! The point of EV (and they're starting to admit this) is that personal transport will be rare, and only available to the ultra rich. Sweden took away EV subsidies because they don't want people to have cars, they want the population to take public transport.
5
That's because of liability. If the insurance company ok's a repair and the car catches fire in the guy's garage, the insurance company owns that liability 100%
5
@teardowndan5364 For a minor accident where a fender may need to be replaced and the battery might need replacement, people (as you say) may refuse to have that replaced. Which may have consequences either through premature failure or a fire. Then we'll have a lot of finger pointing with lawsuits, and one suspects the manufacturers will end up bearing the brunt of it.
5
For some people, experience isn't just the best teacher, it's the only teacher for them.
5
@badchefi or better if you are so smart why don’t you run for office yourself and do a better job A Jelly fish could do better than what we have in the US.
5
@rattusfinkus Can't trust Toyoda's judgment if he still thinks hydrogen is an option. Hydrogen vehicles are not an option. What area of hydrogen propulsion or hydrogen production do you work in?
5
@rattusfinkus The first flaw is you have no idea what the future will hold, especially when large companies the world over are spending venture capital on hydrogen. The second flaw is you have less understanding of the situation than the head of Toyota, who gets his information from the engineers who have been assigned to the hydrogen car project(s). I can list more, but I'm trying not to be insulting to you.
5
@jamesf3683 They will, but a (US) gallon of gasoline right now costs about $2.70, primarily because it doesn't have to be shipped via ocean shipping.
5
@itsMe_TheHerpes lol. Let's make the subsidies voluntary for taxpayers so we don't pay for the fever dreams of the crazies and politicians.
5
@TroySavary So your hypothesis is that the normal people are pushing for EVs with the same fervor as the crazies?
5
@davidvanderklauw The only "market" that the government created was for EVs.
