  1.  @freethinker4991  EV fanatics use that talking point about EVs, but here's the reality: When an Internal Combustion car catches fire, it can be put out using extinguishers when if they catch it early or lots of water from the fire department later. Or worst case they let it burn out in 30 minutes When an EV car, just a car, catches fire, there is no way to put it out ; it burns hot enough to melt steel and destroy concrete. You can't even dump it in a lake to put it out, because it creates its own oxygen. Now imagine a vehicle with batteries 10x as powerful as an EV catch fire. It will be disaster for an entire community. So it's not just about how frequently it happens, it's about the impact when it happens.

  7.  @Michael-jx9bh It's not "technology" that makes Chinese stuff cheaper, its cheaper labor, yes. But when you buy Chinese goods, generally the "technology" that they use is cheaper materials and lack of support after the first months. If you're going to buy a Chinese car, it better better be around $10K or else you'll never get parts, and if there is a costly recall, the company simply goes bankrupt and opens up the next day with a different name.

  8.  @williammeek4078  Quite the reverse. A gasoline fire burns at 800 C, and will certainly burn itself up if given a chance. Fortunately if you have a fire extinguisher with you, it can be extinguished. By contrast, an EV fire burns at 3800 C and will melt steel that is too close to the car. And there is no practical way to extinguish it.

Does it seem odd to you that you need to "do [...] research" before renting a car? Where would one check if chargers were oversubscribed? Shouldn't the agency tell you that ?

  14.  @DemiGod..  Yes, but often as the batteries age, and road debris and minor accidents compromise the structure of the battery they are no longer water tight. It's why insurance companies routinely write off EV with minor damage because the risk of a compromised battery isn't worth the liability to the inrance company.

It means that if there is a better job on the other side of the continent, you can rent a van, put your belongings in a van and move to the other side of the continent.

  16.  @williammeek4078  They're still all first generation. Generations of cars usually include significant upgrades in forms of new technology. What we're seeing now is refinement to the electric cars that were made almost 10 years ago. By the 2nd generation, EVs need to be so good that (1) it is better in every meaningful measurement than a gas car (range, charge time, resistance to cold and heat) (2) Cheaper than the cars they replace and (3) no longer needs taxpayer money to subsidize buyers.

  21. Net Zero is silly even in principle. It means that you pay a company to (in theory) set aside land in the Amazon and they pinky swear that they'll never cut down the trees on that land. What could possibly go wrong?

As pointed out multiple times, Consumer Reports (a major consumer/testing magazine in the US) does an annual survey of owners for cars for what's broken, and it turns out that EVs are not particularly bad at reliability, but they're not particularly good at reliability. Mid-pack at best compared with normal cars. The most reliable brands are Lexus, Toyota, Honda, Acura, Subaru, Mazda and a few others.

California has lost a lot of taxpayers and businesses to Texas over the last 5 years. If that exodus continues, the entire state will be hollowed out, which won't be good for anybody but the owner of Panera.

The battery can't be charged when it's cold, and for people who don't live in houses with garages (which is most of the population), and cannot charge at home, then yes, it's a huge problem. Last year in in the midwest hundreds of driver were stranded waiting for chargers that never were freed up because they ran out of battery waiting for slower charging times. Your argument tells us that you live in an area has mild winters, you charge in your garage, and never have to deal with the debacle of public chargers in the cold. You add 2-3 feet of snow to that mix and you might as well put park an EV for the winter while you bring your second car that can run in weather that's 20 below zero.

  35.  @simonchallenor1006  You have to look at debt versus cashflow. Toyota revenues continue to rise 10% a year, which is amazing in what is a mature market. Toyota can easily manage that debt, and as they shift to a significant investment in hybrids, what you're going to see is that Toyota will sell more hybrid cars than all EV sales combined.

  40. EV lovers always forget that all gasoline filling stations have diesel generators that kick in automatically and are able to pump fuels until they run out of fuel themselves (although smart owners will use the generator to fuel their generators).

  44. Sources indicate the government(s) in the US, taxpayers are subsidizing each EV to the tune of $55,000 USD. Which means the real cost of EVs is generally about double what the sticker price is.

When EVs can charge up fully in 5 minutes, and chargers go up by 3 orders of magnitude in place outside of cities, and the price of EVs comes down by 50% (and not chinese cars). Then sure, people will be more interested.

  49.  @mrbig7718  Sometimes on older cars if the fuel system leaks under the hood and drips on the exhaust manifold a fire can result as well, but these would be poorly maintained vehicles.

  50. The head of Toyota is wrong; in most people's lifetime, we won't see battery vehicles as anything more than 7% of the overall mix of vehicles because of cost and practicality.
