  4.  @johnski4709  I don't know enough about military history to answer that, but IIRC, at the moment, targeting civilians is illegal. I don't believe it was illegal in 45, and in any case, both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were considered to be military targets.

The whole point of weapons is to be destructive. War is not a tea party where people drink from dainty cups with their pinkies pointed out. It's horrific, destructive, and people die in horrible ways. If you don't want this, then don't start a war. I'll ask again, what realistic alternative in 45 would you have suggested?

  16. ​ @Rationalific  Aside from the fact that giving the Japanese advance warning of where an when a bomber would be overhead might be very interesting for the bomber crew, it's still not clear to me that a giant splash would have the same effect. But suppose hypothetically a demonstration was made, and no surrender was forthcoming. Would you then support dropping a bomb on a city?

"As a German I am still horrified to read all kinds of excuses from Americans why they had to do it." Well, I'm not sure why you being a German is relevant, but I wonder what realistic alternative you would have suggested in 45? I'm not quite sure why we're discussing Vietnam.

  25.  @arturmo1046  I think the difference is that the US was attacked by an enemy waging an illegal war of aggression. Germany was also waging an illegal war of aggression. Was Germany attacked in 39 and responding to an attack? I don't see these situations as being equivalent. I'm not quite sure what you mean by self-reflection. What kinds of comments by Americans do you want to see? Yes, we do justify the bombs. They seem to need justification because if you focus on the here and now you're engaging in a form of presentism. If you don't like the bombs, then offer an alternative that would have been realistic in 45.

  27. This just in, military dictatorships are often corrupt and/or incompetent. And often people who warn about attacks might be called defeatist and so will keep quiet. Sometimes there are competing groups that won't cooperate and share information. It's not that the freer democracies don't have these problems too, but it can be a question of degree. I'm pretty sure NHK did a documentary about all the mistakes that were made that stopped Japan from defending against the attacks.

There is actually good evidence, I won't offer a citation, that men can kill other men with not much trouble, but killing women and children, I mean up close and personal, will be very likely to land a man in a psychiatric hospital. I have no evidence but I suspect this is tied to something deep in our brains that helps ensure the survival of the species. So you, not caring about killing women is really quite interesting to me.

I think that the two countries want to engage in commerce, and one of them has a large neighbor with imperialist ambitions that neither country wants to see succeed. So they are allied. Should the large imperialist neighbor ever do something simple, like read Aesop's The North Wind and the Sun and take it to heart, the alliance would probably collapse.
