  15. In any democracy the attitudes of local elected offcials on matters outside the borders of their own constituency. Especially outside their own national borders. Have little or no effect on the polices and practices that actually matter inside their own district, town, city village etc. It has about as much effect as declaring your city a "nuclear free zone" as declaring solidarity with Gaza has on whether or not the potholes get repaired. Or public spaces such as parks are maintained. Or local water systems, sewers and other public services are managed properly. Local elected officials are elected to look after local matters. If your local elected officials do not look after these matters but instead use the position to posture in the local community they should be voted out in the next election. This applies to communities in any nation that has real elections. The practice of some local officials in any democracy to enrich themselves at the expense of the citizenry is another matter. (1) Otherwise you may as well hire professional city managers or revert to officials who find their office through appointment or heriditary means (2). 1) This is another factor of massive immigration into First World (mainly what is refered to as "The West") nations by immigrants from nations where graft and corruption are just the way things are done. Not that these things are not done in the First World. But in the First World everybody knows it is illegal. 2) l am not a fan of hereditary forms of government except for one possible aspect. In such a system it is possible to raise the next generation of rulers, local or national, with a sense of duty to their posisition and responsibilities. Note l said possible. Not that they always would have a sense of duty.

  30. Why is it the Left always fail to understand just what democracy means. Sometimes they seem to think democracy in a representative government means the people have a direct voice in government. A modestly sized city much less a nation state are far too large for such a system to work. The Representative of a district, region or whatever it is called is empowered to act in the interests of the people in that district. All the people. Not just the ones that voted for him or her. And sometimes that representative has to vote on issues in a way that is best for the whole city/region/state/nation even if that nay go against the percieved interests of the people they represent. The modern Left (1) percieve democracy as being a one party state controling legeslative, executive and judicial powers with only minor opposition represtation allowed to maintain the illusion of "democracy". Just look at the post WWll nations that embraced communism. And the titles of those nations. The German Democratic Republic. The only non lie in that name was German. It was neither a Republic or Democratic. And that is just one example. Another issue here is the term Far Right. The Left bandies the term and the label with so little regard for reality it has lost all meaning. Basically anyone to the right if their position on anything is labeled Far Right. This does not mean that Far Right elements do not exist in many societies. But not to the extent that Far Left elements seem to do. Both in my opinion should be shunned as extremists. 1) Personally I have a great deal of distain for the idea that a simple Left or Right label can be used to discribe anyone. Just as Liberal or Conservative can be used to discribe anyone. It is entirely possible for an individual to hold views on different subjects that can be both Left or Right. But far too often the extremists demand ideological purity.

  33. It's obvious. If you can afford to go on holiday you are danger to the health and safety of those less economically advantaged. Now if you gather in a large group for Friday prayers. Well, that's alright. And yes the world has gone slightly mad. No one with half a brain really thinks the current health/medical/contagion crisis is not real. But we should see that it seems no matter what governments try and do nothing will stop it. People are reacting with shock it seems when they find out this edition of a Carona virus has mutated. That's what viruses do. Or they panic when they hear that the current vaccines might be effective against the new strains. Well guess what. The only thing that is a absolutely assured when you are born is YOU WILL DIE AT SOME POINT. Not even taxes are required provided you are creative enough. Even people on welfare, public assistance or what ever you call it pay taxes. Sales tax, VAT etc. The only thing we can say about when we die is we have some choice over the matter. I say some because there things beyond our control. One can live a healthy life style, eat wholesome foods, partake of other things in moderate amounts and still get hit by a bus. None of us physically are immortal. I'll leave the philosophical discussions to others. Accept that you are mortal. Take reasonable precautions for your safety and the safety of others. If you are sick stay home. No one else wants your common cold, Covid or flu. It's yours you get to keep it. Odds are you will be just fine.

  50. It may not distract from my enjoyment in watching a western movie but when the film has its characters using firearms from a later period than the film takes place in. That to me shows a complete lack of historical research on the part of the producers. As to how side arms were carried in Old West (or Real West as opposed to the Hollywood West) there were a variety of rigs. The side carry was generally much higher on the side than the fast draw we see in the movies. Other rigs included the reverse draw style holster. This is the typical carry style for the New Model Remmington that was the standard US Army side arm prior to the adoption of the Colt Single Action Army (aka Peacemaker or Model 1873) and the Smith & Wesson Scholfield. There were also side draw rigs with the pistol carried in front on the opposite side of the dominant hand. And lastly shoulder holsters. The fast draw rig is entirely a creation of Hollywood as far as I know. The "bullet impact" as shown in the movies is purely for cinematic drama. But one thing to consider. The bullets used in the period had far different terminal characteristics than say a jacketed full powered battle rifle round of WWII. The bullets of the 1850 to 1890 Real West were lead with no jacketing. These will have a tendency to deliver all of their energy to the target*. Just not enough to throw somebody across the room. The rope trick was used in the John Wayne movie Rio Lobo on Grorge Plimpton. *As an aside in the 1980s the local police department was looking to change service weapons. The choices were between 9mm and .45ACP. The department went with .45ACP. The round used in the Colt 1911. My brother-in-law was in charge of the program. I asked him why they went with the .45ACP versus the 9x19. After all the 9mm offered higher capacity. His said that first they looked at data for all police reports in which an officer had to fire his weapon. It came out to two or three rounds per incident. Second was the possibility of innocent civilians being hit by rounds that over penetrated. This was a big problem with the 9mm. The .45ACP had a much lower chance of over penetration.
