Although the actual numbers are far less than the ones involved in the Atlantic slave trade there is one crucial difference. The local "governments" where the slaves were coming from were not aiding and abetting the slavers.

I had to check the date to make sure it wasn't April 1st.

One should always be willing to listen to what the other side is saying. And l mean really listen. One reason so you understand just what they are saying. A second is they may be right and you are wrong. But the ideologues on both sides rarely are willing to do that.

@DaBriars Welcomed? Maybe some places. Certainly not where my Irish ancestors went. Plus they were never given a roof over their head and food in their mouths. Plus they realized even with the prejudice against them they had to assimilate into the larger society. How many of today's immigrants are willing to do that. I don't expect immigrants to Ireland, Britain, the US, France or any other Western countries to turn into culturally perfect copies of the Irish or anyone else. But the immigrants should not expect Ireland or any other country to turn into the nation they fled. One of the Central American presidents has stated the problems of wide spread massive immigration is to a large degree the fault of the countries the migrants are fleeing from. The fault lies in that these countries have failed their own citizens. Are their problems all their fault? No they aren't. Some of their problems can be traced to US interference. Just as some nations problems can be traced to economic policies they attempted and could not afford. Or implement properly.

The next version of Shogun will feature a Black actor who is trans playing the Blackthorn role. You get bonus points for ticking off two diversity boxes. In reality if this were a stage production of Romeo and Juliet l could care less. Because then it all about the delivery of the lines of dialog. No doubt this new production of Romeo and Juliet will have the script "updated" to make it more relevant.

The first really successful steam powered flight happened in the early 1930s. A two cylinder double expansion steam engine was fitted to a proven airframe and flown. Simply to prove it could be done. Where the Wrights really succeeded was in their use of wind tunnel data. Which let them refine their wing design. And their propeller design. Their wind tunnel data proved that the lift and drag data that other experimenters were using was wrong. Look at the early attempts and the propellors they used. Crude creations of wood and fabric. The ones the Wrights developed approach the efficency of modern props. The Wrights really did invent contolled usable flight.

Unfortunately their efforts have largely been lost on the wind since COVID-19 and George Floyd

In the US some ethnicities once they could afford a single or multifamily home would look at the space devoted to a front or rear lawn and immediately tearout any lawn and devote it to vegetable gardens. Italians used to be known for this. Not a problem in my book as long as it is kept up. Used to grow a lot of our own vegetables and some fruits ourselves. But building over every square foot or meter of lawn/garden space does something else. In warmer weather l can be outside looking after the flower beds out front. And when l take short break in the backyard it feels about 5 to 10° F cooler simply because of two large shade trees. This is another benefit of what l call private green space. The down side is clean up in the Fall. But as to private vegetable gadens. There is now a movement, at least in the US to seek to eliminate them as some see them as "contributing to excessive greenhouse gases due to their lack of efficiency". If l wished l CV ould cut down my shade trees, tear out the lawn and convert it all to growing vegetables. Maybe l would not be self sufficent but it would go a long way towards eating better in the Summer and Fall. Nothing like a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich made with lettuce and tomatoes you just picked.

@Whoishere2333 When the incident involving Jacob Blake happened a major problem was the spread of false information concerning why the police were there (1) and the video shot by someone from across the street in their apartment was edited to not show the events just before the shots being fired. City and county officials knew the information that was being reported by the media was wrong but did little to counter it. I am not saying the shooting was justified (2). I am saying that social media is a tool that can cause a great deal of harm. 1) The police were there because Mr Blake's girlfriend had a protection order requiring him not to be in her presence. She called 911. There was also an outstanding arrest warrant for Mr Blake for a charge of 3rd Degree Sexual Assault. The officers were there in response to the 911 call and to execute the warrant. 2) I think the number of shots fired comes down to a couple of things. First is adrenaline. Second is the type of weapon. A double action revolver generally takes more effort to fire each round than a semiauto pistol. The officers were armed with semiauto pistols. Officers in Kenosha had not been armed with Revolvers for close to 30 years at the time. And when they carried Revolvers they were limited to issue .38 Special Revolvers or they were allowed to carry .38 Special or .357 Revolvers they had purchased themselves but were only allowed standard .38 Special ammunition. A .357 will chamber both .38 Special and .357 ammunition. The difference is the in the case length and powder charge.

Sometimes l question whether the French as a nation have done much for Western Civilization since Tours. I'll concede that the Metric System is superior. But it was bound to happen eventually.
