  3. The Canadian exports to the US are from factories in Canada owned by US companies producing vital components the US needs to manufacture goods it sells all over the world. They’re vital to US jobs. Also energy. The US has to pay the increased tariffs or lay off hundreds of thousands of workers. Canada can buy their own whisky. Canada can sell most other things elsewhere, and the US can import most other things from elsewhere but at a higher price .

  6. The US now has the weakest policy. The US has been benefiting from strong policies, no more though. The US got to be the second largest exporter in the world due to negotiating with other countries to drop tariffs, now it’s undoing what made America great.

  9.  @DejiiJones_ it is impossible to ‘win’ a trade war, there are just losers and bigger losers. The only country the US cannot be the bigger loser against is China, because the US exports ore $$$ worth of goods to all other countries than they import. So if tarrifs wars continue, prices rise to the point no countries import or export, and the worlds biggest exporters lose the most, China is the biggest exporter, so the biggest loser, the US is the second biggest loser.

  10. Won’t happen. The US’s existing manufacturing was only able to compete on the global scale because it outsourced some parts manufacturing. Now there will be job losses and US exports will be even less competitive. What little will remain will survive because it can source parts from India or Vietnam etc instead. The US is already the world’s second biggest exporter. There’s pretty much only downwards to fall. What killed US manufacturing was a high US dollar, because of all the other exports the US has. The higher the USD, the less point in manufacturing in the US, even with tariffs.

  11. They didn’t ‘do’ anything, they’re not even ‘discussing’ doing anything. They’re complaining that if they even did give missiles to Ukraine, and Ukraine used them to attack a bridge that’s in occupied Ukraine that they would need too many. Russia never declared war so that makes them all terrorists. And that’s without including the passenger jet they literally shot down and are still protecting the troops responsible for.

  12.  @xiphoid2011  There was maintenance workers on the bridge but it wasn't closed. They stopped vehicles from entering the bridge minutes before the collapse (seems shorter in sped up footage circulating) but some vehicles took a while to leave the bridge. They did not get maintenance workers off the bridge in time as they weren't driving in their vehicles. 2 people from the bridge were rescued (one uninjured and one needing hospital) about 6 more are missing presumed dead.

  13.  @namewithheldforprivacy7107  Ultimately that will cost US lives, the US isn't going to stand by and allow Europe to be invaded, that's where all the customers for US products are. But by inviting others to attack it by pretend withdrawing it increases the chance they will, drawing the US into the conflict whether Trump wants it or not.

  15. Putting tariffs on one country leads to sourcing of alternatives, eg lots now comes from Mexico that used to come from China due to the China tariffs. Problem is, for some things, you run out of alternatives once you tariff enough countries. Then you actually have to pay. Also, the US is the largest exporter besides China, literally China is the only country the US can engage in a trade war and lose less than the other country. Both countries lose still. Also, with China, the tariffs kept were for strategic reasons, not economic ones. The US was still worse off with them, but it was judged harming China was more important.

  20.  @draconomega  The problem is the reason they were money printing is because the GDP hasn't changed in 15 years. So in order to avoid not paying people, they made money out of thin air. But their debts are to other countries in dollars and Yuan etc. So how do they actually get the dollars to become dollarized, when they already owe basically their entire GDP in debt. If the entire country ate nothing, bought nothing, and built nothing but to pay off their debt, they'd have $0 USD each in a year. To get the dollars they will have to sell the country or default on their debts. If they default, who will trade with them? Do they have anything left to sell?

  21.  @A.S.D442  Somalia has less than half the Debt to GDP ratio of Argentina. Basically, they're poorer than Somalia, and Somalia's economy is tiny compared to Argentina's, so debt forgiveness is a big component of how Somalia has not suffered in the same way, because there are much much smaller amounts to forgive. Argentina owes 100x as much money as Somalia, that means there's a lot more USD in Somalia compared to the size of the economy. Also, the USD isn't the official currency of Somalia, using it unofficially allows the government to manage parts of the economy in different ways, once you give up your own currency you lose that ability. Yes, you can mis-manage that ability as in Argentina, but that mis-management was less of the actual issue than the stagnant GDP which is the relevant metric regardless of which currency you use, Somalia's GDP has doubled in 10 years. Argentina's GDP hasn't gone anywhere in that time.

And yet you think suppling weapons to a country that is defending itself that can only be used on their own territory will start world war 3? Putin must have thin skin. Can dish it out but can’t take it. Iran is already supplying weapons to the Houthi to use against ships, and yet even then there’s no war with Iran. Russia supplied weapons to the Taliban to fight the US, again, still no war. No one is going to war for supplying weapons, or even training, intelligence etc.

  28. The US is the second biggest exporter in the world. This is going to change that in a hurry. lol. The US can only produce so much because of imports of essential parts from Canada and Mexico. More expensive parts = less exports and less US jobs, not more. Canada already buys basically the same as it sells to the US, but the US has US companies in Canada with facilities they own to supply their US factories. The more you export, the more you stand to lose in a trade war. Everyone loses, but some lose more than others, and besides China the US stands to lose the most. No one even wants to buy US products anymore. This didn’t help.

  29. They’re not invincible but they’re very good with the right missiles at taking out enemy radar and then anti air. They are most at risk on the ground so I expect along side training, lots of the time has been spent building safe(r) places to base them / move them between.

  32. 10,000x more fentanyl leaves the US for Canada than vice versa according to the US. So that’s not the real reason. More illegal immigrants leaving into Canada too. But Trump needs congress to legally implement tariffs unless he can lie and make up a security reason. There’s basically zero fentanyl coming from Canada so they can’t actually do anything differently. It’s impossible. Also, the US has responsibility for the US border. Canada has stopped 9,000 tonnes of fentanyl coming into Canada from the US, while the US has stopped less than 20 pounds, mostly on US citizens who are crossing with it. The leading cause of death in the US after cancer and heart disease is RFK Jr, followed by Trump’s handling of COVID.

  35. When Putin invaded Ukraine he said it was to create a buffer zone. Zelenskyy is a great comedian, unfortunately the humour gets lost in translation. Saying it was to create a buffer zone is away of saying nothing while twisting the knife of irony extra hard. There’s obviously no prospect of marching on Moscow but it’s obviously gone even better than expected for Ukraine so far. Russia being either unable, or unwilling to counter attack while they had the advantage is disastrous for them. Either they care more about a few feet of Ukraine than they do more of Russia than they have taken from Ukraine this year, or they simply cannot spare enough resources to counter attack on home soil, with theoretically enormous numerical superiority.

  36. They do drop anchor and go full reverse. Power outage means it’s unable to be steered. Even an anchor will not stop a ship like this. Investigation will be into why it lost power and if there was any issues with power earlier, why it hit the bridge is bloody obvious to know how ships work.

  38. Um what. Most people I know here have garages. In the UK where that’s more true there are chargers on the kerb. The problem in Australia mostly at the moment is just the up front cost. Eventually they will need more apartments with chargers etc, but that’s not the bottleneck at the moment. Lithium prices spiked hugely during the pandemic and EV prices went way up when they would otherwise have been getting cheaper. Also lots of people now drive much less so paying more up front for a vehicle that costs less to run is less appealing. Other countries where there are more EVs might start running into charger availability problems but with so few EVs in Australia that’s not it yet.

  39.  @1raindrops the thing is, every additional country the US puts tariffs cumulatively impacts the US, while for any other country other than China, Mexico and the US they’d barely notice if the US put tariffs on them, as they import dramatically more from the US than they export and barely export anything to the US. So if the US puts tariffs on everyone else they will harm themselves 100% but everyone else only a few %.

  42. The airframe is an old design but they’re still building them with new electronics. They’ve never made a more manoeuvrable aircraft so it’s perfect in an anti drone/anti cruise missile role. And it fits state of the art missiles, which is the main reason to use it, as it’s extremely effective at taking out anti air defense radar from beyond the range of the air defense.

  45. No one ‘wins’ a trade war it’s lose/lose. The country that exports the most loses the most. The world’s second biggest exporter is the US so will lose the second most. The larger your economy the more tariffs can make you bleed. Tariffs can’t hurt North Korea for example. Currency markets are perverse, a rising US dollar means US exports are worse value and US jobs will be lost. The US dollar tends to rise in cases of instability. The more chaos, the higher the USD. If it gets high enough it could tip the US into a depression, as other countries trade between themselves but stop using it as the reserve currency. The US economy has benefited from being a reserve currency in part due to being anti-tariff.

  47.  @k00LGuY671 the % is misleading, the US is much larger, so exports more $$ to every country than it imports except to China. So Canada will just export to another country that will export to the US, costing them little but the US consumer a lot. The US will quickly discover 100% of exports go to some country that imports ore than it exports.

  48.  @DavinderKumar-k8d it’s not really, it’s just not as trivial as trade with the US. Shipping is really cheap, it’s how countries like Australia trade, with zero land neighbors and they export nearly a trillion tonnes. The main issue is in Canadian industries that only exist to export things like car parts to the US. No one else needs the car parts. And the US can’t source them from anywhere but China, Mexico and Canada either. Even if they could build them themselves it will take a decade to setup, and require huge steel imports anyway.
