  7. If it was remotely cost comparable in the long term you wouldn’t need tariffs. It’s decades of pain for, if you’re lucky, higher prices still even after you’ve built a domestic capacity. But even that won’t work, because things don’t move from China to the US because the US puts tariff on China, they move to say Vietnam, the next cheapest place. To get it back to the US basically all countries would need tariffs on them. And given the US is the second biggest exporter it would hurt the US the seconds most as other countries retaliated. Still able to trade with each other but no longer demanding US products. Making the US among the least attractive places to manufacture.

  10.  @thestevezx7 Tesla doesn’t make vehicles for the EU in the US anymore, it makes them in Germany. It makes them for the rest of the world in China. Their biggest customer outside the US for cars made in the US was Canada, which didn’t tariff them. Canada also makes a lot of parts that other US automakers need to keep producing cars. So this will hurt US car manufacturers a lot, except Tesla not that much…. Hmmm wonder why.

The constant nuclear ‘threats’ are the strongest weapon they have, because no country can use them and remain in existence. Putin is threatening suicide, if you believe he’s serious time to move to Antarctica.

  19. There are many many versions of radar and avionics for the F16, including extremely modern. They aren’t going to be flying over Russia. They’re going to probably be shooting down drones and cruise missiles over Ukraine or using AGM-88 to take out Radar.

  21. A trade war is lose/lose. If the US tariffs the whole world and the whole world tariffs back, the US cumulatively has to pay all the tariffs they have against the world, while other countries can freely trade with each other and only have to put tariffs on the one country. Canada has put tariffs on things they don’t need from the US, while the US has put blanket tariffs on everything including things like car parts, and oil, that the US needs to make cars and refine oil etc to on sell to other countries. Tariffs are, I will hurt myself so I can hurt you. Both parties lose, but if you don’t retaliate then there’s little chance of stopping someone insane enough to want self harm. Especially those too rich to feel the harm personally. Basically the more countries put tariffs on the US in response the worse for the US. If Trump just put tariffs of China, not Mexico or vice versa, the US might not lose so badly. But China, Mexico AND Canada, no chance the US doesn’t wind up the biggest loser. Everyone loses, just not as much.

Frequently it provides assurances they’re not going to launch all their nuclear weapons in a surprise attack, so you don’t have to launch yours. Any bugging of Germany has revealed that despite the usual mumblings of people whose job it is to think of all options, all the time, Germany is still doing less than the rest of Europe in terms of protecting Ukraine from their attackers.

  27.  @sinjinadams2862 the Canadian agreement was signed by Trump in his last term, and the ‘tariffs’ you are referring to were never in effect, they only would have been a thing if the US exceeded quotas way higher than the exports ever reached. So you’re being lied to, there were no tariffs actually effecting exports to Canada, no agreement was in effect for decades, it was completely torn up and renegotiated under Trump. As Australia showed by not retaliating, tariffs are just a tax paid by the people in the country implementing them that harms both countries.

  28. The US is the largest economy in the world. Damn experts. They did also say to tax the wealthy like Musk and Trump properly, but instead both sides refused to do so and so the middle class is struggling. So more ignoring the experts I guess…. Trade deficits aren’t a zero sum game. The US is the second largest exporter after China, if all countries of the world were to balance the trade with the US it would cost tens of millions of US jobs and tens of trillions of dollars. The US is importing very slightly more products from Canada and Mexico so it can turn them (things like car parts) into fully manufactured products like cars, then sell those to third countries for even higher profits. If you balance that by buying less from them, you also get to sell less to other countries. Balancing isn’t a positive, it’s not even the goal. You want to instead tax the people benefiting from the US’s exports. The very wealthy. And use that to reduce the burden on everyone else.

  32. The US has a much larger GDP so a bigger $$$$$ is a much much larger %. 3% of US GDP is more than either country exports into the US, and the US pays the tariffs on imports to the US. Canada and Mexico only pay tariffs.

He then propped up Hamas to subjegate the Gazans under Hamas, feeding them money and selecting a handful of people to be let out of the prison he turned Gaza into. At the same time settlements expanded dramatically in the west bank, giving Hamas the best recruiting tool ever (beyond films like this). To have a successful state you need to be able to actually build something, and have elections, and not a terrorist government propped up by your neighbor for their own political gain. Realistically we need UN peacekeepers to do what they were designed for, not Hamas or the Israelis in charge here.

  34. It wasn’t touched on because it’s untrue. The US border leaks 10,000 times more fentanyl into Canada and basically none the other way. Trump cannot put tariffs on anything without congress unless he lies and pretends it’s a security issue. There’s nothing more Canada can do about this, they don’t let fentanyl through already. They could start I guess, but the US border is a US responsibility. Hundreds of thousands of US jobs in manufacturing depend on parts made in Canada and Mexico where there are no alternatives and making in the US is neither cost effective or possible without a decade of building factories. The US imports energy and oil from Canada that its own supplies can’t replace due to the type of oil. This will cost a lot more US lives than it will save, millions will lose work and thousands will suicide as a result.

The trade balance is pretty even and was actually in the US’s favour when you consider most of the manufacturing that will be impacted by tariffs was actually US owned factories in Canada and Mexico, using the cheaper labour to make parts for US final assembly to allow the US to compete against China in exports to third countries. This will just make the US export a lot less to everyone. The rising USD is going to be fatal for a lot of US jobs as other nations trade between themselves instead of with the US.

  41. When they built the old one that wouldn't have imagined ships that big. These days if in a busy port there's only 2 solutions to avoid this, artificial islands to make the ships run aground well away from the pillars, or, if that's not practical due to water depth etc, a tunnel. You basically wouldn't design this bridge this way anymore. In the 70's a lot of other collapses from impacts hadn't happened yet, and in places where they did some still don't let big ships under the new bridges and have moved ports out onto reclaimed land.

The whole reason the US buys things from Mexico and Canada is to turn them Into even more expensive things to export to third countries. Tariffs are a lose/lose proposition, but the only country the US could put tariffs on and not wind up losing more than the other countries is China. The drugs aren’t coming from Canada, the US statistics prove that. The debt is because of things like Trump’s tax cuts for the ultra wealthy. Tax people like Musk properly and the debt problem will eventually go away, but tariffs won’t help it, even though they are taxes on American consumers, they disproportionately harm the poor and middle class who spend a higher % of their income. And tariffs can be worked around, at a cost, to the point they don’t raise much either.

  45.  @howhigh0521  Despite what Bolton says, all of the NATO countries are beating the 2% voluntary 'target'(not minimum) over the last year .Poland is beating it by 2x and outspending on a % basis the USA. Even Canada, which could do absolutely nothing and still have the US defend them is spending more than the target. The US wanted Europe to not spend so much following WWII because that prevented them from making their own arms industries and kept them dependent on the US arms industry. Now their spending is increasing they're becoming less dependent on US arms exports as with higher spending comes the opportunity to be more self sufficient. Basically, by proving unreliable, the US has lost a lot of customers, both within NATO, and other customers these nascent arms industries can now supply instead of the US supplying them.

Tariffs on Australian products would do basically nothing while counter tariffs would make a much bigger impact l, though not really impact the US much. Australia is more impacted by the US tariffs on China than any that could be levied directly. Australia sells mostly to China who will lower demand of the US tariff them.

  48.  @bingobangini France has 300, the UK around 260. Both with submarine based second strike capability. Game theory says that if someone sends a nuke your way you Must send one their way. Else you will lose but escalation should be proportional, being the first to escalate to nuclear weapons is bad, if someone overestimates how many you are sending that’s the end of you.

  49.  @thomaswoelfel5625  The US spent decades discouraging NATO from having its internal arms industries because it kept the US industry well funded, and supplied with customers. That also suited both better because it kept the manufacturing out of the front lines of Europe. Now Europe is massively ramping up production, a process that will take years, but will also provide them and many other countries a strong alternative to the US arms industry, which is not good news for the US long term. That dependency was desired and engineered and it's been given up for nothing in return. If the US and Russia went to war, the strongest country in world would probably be New Zealand or Madagascar or something, because there would be nothing else left. Meanwhile if Russia went to war with Europe the US would lose its biggest consumer of all its goods.
