Given the climate of the society at large in 1948, the desegregation order lost Truman votes. 1948 election was extremely close; given that he had just won a huge and horrible war he should have been incredibly popular. Maybe in history textbooks you have seen photos of Truman holding up a newspaper headline that screams "Dewey Wins."? The newspapers already assumed that they could go to print confident that Truman's opponent had won the White House. But Truman won, just barely.

  10. I think the fight against Hitler and the horrible things that were laid bare when the camps were liberated made some in the military a bit more idealistic in the post war years. They had a sense that they had fought the good fight, and therefore they had no appetite to enforce racism. Unfortunately, the entire military didn't feel that way, and the society at large turned their backs, making the 50s a tumultuous time for civil rights struggles. Nice to see the military showing leadership and trying to create momentum for desegregation in the society.

  11. That so called ex Marine is an embarrassment to military service. NYC subway riders would not feel at all safe with wannabe vigilantes on the trains. Vigilantes and fake good guys are a danger to innocent bystanders. If a person yelling about hunger and food scares you, you should change to the adjoining subway car. That is what any adolescent coming home from high school would know to do. If that guy really wanted to be a leader, a hero, a Marine, he could have held the door and assisted other passengers to leave the car. Now the vulnerable young man in the middle of an episode is alone in a quiet car and probably already calming down. From your safer position in the adjoining car, your next goal is to contact the conductor so that transit police can meet the train in the next station. This is easily accomplished by walking through the train to the conductor's booth. It usually takes about five minutes for a train to arrive in the next station. So penny is such a warrior, he was incapable of remaining calm, formulating a plan, and maintaining the situation for five minutes. Got it. No, I do not at all feel safe with a guy like penny on the subway. Penny, please take a taxi in the future, if you can handle that. I don't want any cab drivers to get hurt on your watch.

Thomas was not content to join Alito's opinion tumbling over Roe, he also wrote a separate disgusting opinion that no other justice signed. In this separate opinion he stated that several cases that are based on the right to privacy, such as Roe, should be reviewed next. He enumerated the case that allows married couples to use contraception and the marriage equality case (gay marriage). However, the interracial marriage case Loving v Virginia was also based on the right to privacy and was used as the foundation of the marriage equality case. So if one case falls, the other case falls too. So sorry, Ginni Thomas. And I guess Thomas has such a limited understanding of the law, he didn't notice his mistake. And none of his SCOTUS friends bothered to help him out. Sad bunch this court. Hey, Chief Justice Roberts, could you please get your court back on track?

Consistently low performing states are starving their public schools, in the interest of low taxes I suppose, and their substandard education brings the nation down. Also, it seems that red states have an interest in maintaining a pool of undereducated low wage workers that certain business interests crave. Plus, undereducated citizens likely vote less and exercise less critical thinking when they do engage with the political process. Add some book bannings and WOW! USA, wake up.

  15. Yes, you are missing a lot. Also seems obvious that you have never spent time in a classroom or even an after school program or a summer camp. Try explaining to kindergartners 2+2=4 after they ask you, "But why?" Then try 3+1=4 and they repeat with a sweet smile, "But why?" Then the next day, the sweethearts forget the lesson because they were living their best kindergarten life in the playground, and the lesson has to be repeated again. Yes, this is the problem. People who have absolutely no understanding of education, cognitive psychology, child psychology, adolescent psychology, but they are certain that learning is a hoax.   19. But what kind of service? In World War One most black soldiers were cooks, janitors, etc. That's why the Tuskegee Airmen were so amazing. Getting combat duty in World War Two, and Korea and beyond meant real service with a real pathway to promotions and higher rank and a true career in the military, not just more servitude. Also, look into something called "the double v". I stumbled on that when I was reading about black and white movies from the 40s. The concept was that World War Two had to be a double victory against Fascism and racism. We couldn't claim the moral high ground against Hitler unless we clean up our racism at home. In addition, we needed to recruit Black soldiers to win a war that frankly we were losing at the beginning of the conflict. Double v probably motivated some of what was on Truman's mind in 1948.

The AR 15 was also used in Uvalde, Buffalo, Parkland, Las Vegas, Aurora, San Bernardino, Boulder, Midland, Sutherland, and Tree of Life. Multiple news sources have reported this.   27. I think the other point to make here is the way Pale Male created a population of hawks who would visit other "nearby" parks, well, nearby as the crow flies, so to speak. When my daughter was practicing long jump with her track group, who was supervising from the trees? A red tail hawk. Our park is not super close to Central Park, but probably just a stretch of the wings for a hawk. It would be interesting to know if someone in the Central Park Conservancy kept data on Pale Male's offspring and any new families or colonies they created in other city parks.

  28. Stay strong. With other illnesses too (auto immune, maybe others?) there seem to be certain meds that work great for about ten years, then not so much. So frustrating. Have you tried to contact Sen. Fetterman's office? Most of the senators even have YouTube channels. I have received info from Sen. Whitehouse and Sen. Murphy's channels, and I don't even live in those states. I'm sure if you sent an email, he would be pleased to share info with you. Since you are a veteran, Walter Reed should be able to share info with your doctor. A lot of this stuff is probably public information. Of course, I understand that the VA is a mess, but there might be a pathway through the bureaucracy? Try to contact Fetterman's office. His office has a staff to communicate with citizens after all. I read a good article in a reputable magazine (sorry, I can't remember exactly which one. I think Time?) that exercise, meditation/mindfulness and nutrition plus CBT/talk can be as effective as meds? No side effects, so that's good. But it can't be yoga once in a while, it has to be a regimen like a medication schedule. Very rough for people who can't get out of bed to commit to daily exercise? Some people change meds five times before finding the right fit. Sorry I rambled on so much. Just to say, I understand your frustration. Stay strong, stay hopeful, stay awesome. 🐝🌻🦋

I will never forget this student who told me that he still remembered a lesson I did on the dictionary, and that he felt that he improved his spelling because of that. Using captions would dismantle the US Senate, wearing a hoodie made him unfit for office, etc. There are lots of objective measurements of economic growth that show that Biden is doing the job. Wall Street records, historically low unemployment, new jobs created, etc etc. The amount of legislation signed is impressive. I guess we should feel lucky that FDR never had to engage in debates. One very wise and terrific teacher and supervisor used to tell me, "Just because you are a good teacher doesn't mean you have to be a missionary." She was really helpful in reminding people when they were crossing the line and straying into burn out. If you are going to tutor, sign up for one of the paid tutoring slots, don't do it for free. Burn out helps no one. At one point, we did have a yearly stipend for supplies( don't know if that benefit was lost in subsequent contracts). Some schools got teachers to use their supply money to pay for their xerox copies. (Really. Find me a tech executive who would pay for his own supplies and xerox copies.) A strong union chapter can really help with some of these issues. And it will still be a hard job, but at least if teachers stick together, they might lose fewer teachers to burn out. Hang in there?

  42. BTW, you do realize that USA public school systems are managed on the state level, not the federal level? That's why some states are low performing while other states have admirable academic performance; some states are instituting book bans while other states know this is a ridiculous anti democratic idea. Each state has its own state Dept of Education, and they set curriculum. Teacher certification, school funding, those issues are decided on the state and local level. That's why some people will only buy a house in a town that has a good school system. The federal government tries to exert some influence through monies, especially title one monies to support low performing students. If you want to quality for title one money, your school must do certain things to earn it. If your school seems like a federal prison, maybe you have used too much of your school's budget on resource officers? Try more guidance counselors? Gun control?

  44. Like many things in capitalism, this is about money. Pay teachers what a masters degree is worth, period. Unfortunately, money equals respect in a capitalist system, so consistently low wages for teachers are a huge part of the disrespectful messaging of our society. Then we wonder why there is disrespectful behavior coming from students and parents. If excessive paperwork is a problem (and it is) hire administrative assistants and more teacher's aides. Would any high powered tech company ask their executives to work without an administrative assistant? If discipline is the problem, hire more deans. Not necessarily school resource officers; those are cops. People with an understanding of child psychology and cognitive psychology are needed as part of the classroom team to say, "Mary, come with me because you are not letting your teacher teach right now. Let's talk, you fix your behavior, and then you can come back to your class." When this happens smoothly without interrupting the lesson, the change in tone is huge. For too long, certain states have been starving their public schools. Enough is enough.
