His "State of the Union" act didn't say anything about the state of the union, but that's fine: anything he might have said would have been lies anyway. As performance art, and as a campaign demonstration, is was well produced, well carried-out, a very competent and professional piece of work. Leni Riefenstahl would have approved of Trump's performance and of all his supporting writers, directors, and stage-assistants.

  34. There are thousands of things Trump has done that are impeachable. That's not the question. The question is, what is convicatble? As long as the Senate is steeped in invincible ignorance, nothing is convicatble. If the Republicans had had any sense and if they had anytime recently been true to their own claimed values, they would have 25'd Trumpout around month six. They didn't, so he's on their head. Democrats can do them the favor of impeaching him when they come to their senses and become willling to convict. This means that investigating Trump, to give the Republicans the information they need to come to their senses, is a job to be done -- but it's not the most important one. Let there be the necessary inestigations -- but let's not make a big thing about it, folks, it's the GOP's problem, not the Democrats'. The Democrats' problem must be showing what good government looks like. Trump is the Republicans' problem.

People feel both optimistic about change and confident in their own abilities with which to bring it about; they become impatient with the old, with authority, with stasis. Authority is obdurate, the mass sweep it aside. Immiseration does not bring about change. Once conditions get really bad they stay bad or get worse.
