Which brings us to an interesting point: countries like Sweden and Denmark score themselves around 3% Christian on surveys -- but it's that low because a large percentage of secular socialists have a positive view of Jesus of Nazareth and take the position, "No, I'm not good enough to qualify as a Christian." No American Evangelist has an attitude remotely close to this.

It is not true that the depressing effects of immiseration are limited to times of totalitarianism. Pessimism, feeling of hopelessness, political despair always and everywhere serve the right and lessen people's ability to take command of their circumstances. Fear, uncertainty, and pessimism lead to parliamentary victories for the Hitlers and the Trumps. From the Glorious Revolution of 1688, through the American Revolution of 1776 which built on its ideals, up to the Russian Revolution of 1905, major revolutions have always been built on mass optimism and hopeful circumstances. Russia's collapse in 1917 brought about Kerensky. The hope of peace brought about the Revolution that replaced him. And your claim for slavery? Uh, no. Slavery is generally abolished by ruling classes -- usually only after technological change has made it uneconomic. Individual slaves who made their way to freedom were the confident and able ones, hopeful for the better lives they could make for themselves.
