@shaunnickalls453 Different reasons in the UK to most other countries. Here it's mainly about new terrible trade deals that allow foreign imports to undercut British produce by allowing food that is produced to lower standards. Also, they were promised that all EU subsidies would be paid by the UK government after brexit but they weren't. On top of that, our main export market for food was the EU and that's dead now. And then there's the new veterinary checks introduced by the government which are really expensive and there's not enough vets to do them
13
No but he was by far the worst
13
A lot of conservative voters are more likely to switch to lib dem than labour but a lot of life long conservative voters just stayed at home
13
@fabio8738 They are striking for better pay and working conditions. Those are also the reason for the staff shortages in the NHS. Since 2021 40,000 nurses left the NHS. They need to improve pay and conditions to retain existing staff and attract new staff. The strikes are trying to help the situation
13
I'd say Nadine Dorries has said farm more stupid things than Abbot
13
Yet when Starmer said he should be fired, everyone jumped on him like he was being unreasonable
13
Why should the tax payer pay to protect a tax haven?
13
They eliminated the 2yr wait by letting everyone on it die
13
Private bank as in a bank for private customers as opposed to business customers
12
Working until 75 is just unrealistic. People in physical jobs just won't have the strength and fitness to keep up and those of us in technical jobs will lose our problem solving skills as the brain naturally deteriorates in old age. My father intended to keep working and realised he wasn't able to do his job properly once he was 68 so fully retired
12
And the Portuguese rail network is nationalised
12
Why would they come to England when Germany & France both give them higher benefits payments?
12
It's overseas students who keep British universities open. They pay far more than British students. Putting them off coming here to study means we will lose universities and then we will have nowhere for our future engineers, scientists, teachers, etc, etc to study and Britain will fall even further behind the rest of the world. Family members can only come here on a visa, they aren't entitled to permanent residency, they can't claim any sort of support at all so I don't see the problem.
12
They're using the standard politician tactic following any mistake. Deflect attention from their own failings and hope everyone forgets.
12
@T5Zplayer Did they not? What about when they allowed pensions to fall well behind inflation? Or how they allowed energy bills in Britain to become the highest in the world last year without giving any extra help to pensioners? Or how about their cuts to sickness and disability benefits which many not specifically hurt pensioners but hit the most vulnerable. Tories also continually supported the erosion of workers pay and despite giving several tax cuts, not a single one was for the working classes. I'm not defending Labour but lets not pretend that the tories are better
12
@taffyterrier Since when is £35k a kings ransom? That's a pretty cheap king
12
It's not the majority of water companies that are foreign owned, it's all of them. I've worked in the water industry for a couple decades and everything is about saving money and balancing fines against the cost of fixing things. We don't have the dirtiest rivers and lakes in Europe though, our waterways are actually some of the cleanest in Europe. I've done some work across Europe over the years and some countries such as Spain, Greece and Portugal treat their sewerage far less than in the UK
12
I think there are very few Farage supporters who have the £1m minimum balance or £3m savings required to open a Coutts account.
12
If only there were a NI government they could negotiate with...
12
He did say he was going to do this before the last mayoral election so effectively Londoners have had a vote on it. It mostly seems to be people who never go anywhere near London who are complaining about it. One of my work colleagues is always going on about it so I asked him how often he goes there and he said "why would I want to visit that dump? I went there once in the 80's and didn't like it" so he's getting all worked up about something that will never effect him. It's weird. Personally, I don't go there often and if I did I wouldn't drive anyway
12
Aid is nearly all paid on condition of natural resources or trade etc in return. It's never just given away
12
None of the things he has been saying would be in the budget actually happened. It's now clear that he just made it all up. Also the OBR report in to it said the opposite to what he's been saying
12
@cw8867 The difference is that MP wages have kept up with inflation and not fallen 35% behind over the last 13 years
12
Maybe it would have helped if Boris hadn't closed down the pandemic response team despite previously acknowledging that a pandemic would be the biggest threat to the UK
12
Yes, aliens would fly millions of light years and just go to New Jersey
11
Maybe it makes him feel comfortable. Who cares what other people do?
11
This is from a woman in a public sector job which has had above inflation rises for the last 12 years while all other public sector workers have had below inflation or nothing.
11
I should imagine that 95% of the British public could not care less either way about Harry attending his father's coronation. That same 95% would probably be rather unhappy to see Andrew there
11
I'd like to see the money in public services go to providing those services rather than syphoned off to shareholders of private companies
11
The problem there is much of what's labelled as British isn't. For example if chicken is imported from Kazakhstan then turned in to chicken nuggets in a factory in Britain it can then be labelled as British. Most people seeing that union flag logo on the packaging would then think it was a British chicken, raised, butchered and processed in Britain but it's not.
11
@Grace2HelpInTmeOfNeedEvenIjits No one has ever used that hand signal as a gesture of "giving their heart"
11
They do. Thats the reason why doctors and nurses are unable to work part time to help pay for living costs while studying which prevents a lot of people going in to these careers. I'd have never been able to do my degree if I couldn't do my part time job to pay for food, busses etc
11
He must be confused, a German GP earns around 200k to 250k euros. There are British doctors going to Germany. Also, seems very unprofessional for a GP to discuss this with a patient so I'm guessing this conversation never happened
11
People opposing racism is stupid?
11
£10bn paid in subsidies to the incredibly profitable oil and gas producers by the British tax payer and what do we get in return? The highest energy prices in the world
11
Those people should be striking for better pay. We're all getting screwed. Britain has the lowest average salaries of any of the top 10 major economies and apparently we're the 5th biggest. Instead of suggesting people should be brought down to the lowest pay level, fight to get your pay raised.
11
They also decided against recovering the £8bn for faulty PPE and the £38bn for the test and trace app that didn't work and a potential £4bn in furlough fraud
11
@monsterjazzlicks No, she's stood by his money
10
There isn't. A quick google brought up articles from Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Washington Post, New York Times, The Sun, The Daily Mail and I can't be bothered to list the rest. Why is it every time someone on here says the media is hiding something from us I can usually find loads of reports on that subject? Just because it's not trending on youtube doesn't mean it's being hidden. A protest in France hardly generates much interest because there's always protests about something in France, it's their national sport
10
Restored suggest he once had credibility
10
Instead of arguing against them getting a decent pay rise, we should be arguing for all of us to get one as well
10
He's made zero progress on a single one of his pledges Inflation is not falling Channel crossings only fell during the time when there were storms in the channel and they couldn't cross The national debt is still rising NHS waiting lists are still growing The economy is not growing despite the fact that inflation should increase GDP by default
10
Nothing to do with a decade and a half of austerity?
10
There's certainly no arguing that he's elderly. Time for the US to introduce an age limit of 65 on the president
10
I'm sure teachers forcing pupils in to their cars could never end badly....
10
In every single EU country, students can get get visas for immediate family. Same in the US where I did my masters
10
We subsidised a hell of a lot under the tories. Remember when we got absolutely fleeced as the oil companies made eye watering profits last year? Well we gave them £10bn in subsidies as they ripped us off. We subsidised investment banks and foreign property developers and got nothing in return. At least when labour spend, we get infrastructure or public services or people get paid more and return it to the economy through spending and tax. I'm happy with what Labour are doing except the winter fuel allowance, they handled that very badly
10
I don't mind taxes if they go to public services but they dont, they go to corporate subsidies and the profits of tory mates
10
@taffyterrier Australia pays a decent wage which is why all our doctors and nurses are headed there
10
This is entirely my fault. I bought a new motorbike. Obviously this would only cause months of rain and wind to prevent me riding it
