These articles always say “his brakes failed” or “he lost his brakes.” More likely, he destroyed his brakes by improper operation of his truck. Heavy trucks use low gears to control speed on downgrades, not service brakes. What gear was he using to start down the grade? Was the grade marked? Could he read the grade sign? What training did he have? Was he properly licensed for heavy trucks? Can a driver be licensed without demonstrating knowing how to take a downgrade safely?

Low gears, supplemented by a Jake brake, are used to descend a hill. Very little use of service brakes should be required. There was evidence that he knew his brakes had been overheating before he got to that grade, yet he went ahead, probably in too high a gear.
