  5. Peter is incorrect about the need to develop implosion technology. If you can enrich U-235, you can build a gun-assembled weapon. A gun-assembled weapon is just a tube with a chunk of U-235 at each end, and a propellent charge to drive one piece into the other. The Hiroshima bomb was a gun-assembled weapon. It was considered so fool-proof that Hiroshima WAS the test site. Peter's assertion that a potential nuclear power is vulnerable in the period between their first successful test and having a deliverable weapon is incorrect, because a gun-assembled weapon can be tested on an enemy. Other countries have built arsenals of gun-assembled weapons. South Africa's nuclear arsenal was all gun-assembled devices.

And if China REALLY wants to push things to the wall, China imports resources that are vital to its continued existence as an industrial nation. Oil being the most obvious. The modern industrial Chinese state is the product of global trade. The more China is cut off from global trade, either by their own actions or by the actions of other nations, the weaker China becomes. Ultimately, this is China's greatest strategic weakness. In the event of war, China doesn't have the naval capacity to protect maritime trade that China depends on for survival. About 70% of China's oil comes by tanker, along routes the Chinese Navy simply cannot protect.

Whether it's FJB's policy of pissing off the Saudis, or FJB's policy of restricting drilling permits, or FJB's policy of using ESG to deny funding to oil companies, or FJB's cancellation of Keystone XL, or any of the other anti-oil policies FJB has adopted, it's on FJB. WE voted for this when we "elected" FJB. Expensive energy has increased the cost of everything else that is physical, and requires shipping, too. The cure for Bidenflation is to get rid of FJB, in 2024.

  24. There won't be a complete government shutdown. People will still get taxes withheld from their paychecks, and Social Security checks will go out on time. NOBODY wants to be the party that put Grandma out on the street. That would not just piss off Grandma, but also the kids she had to move back in with. Cutting off Social Security would be the political equivalent of diving into the Sun without a space suit. Not gonna happen.

  25. Unlike China, Japan had a blue water navy. China would be so screwed in a war with the US that it would probably end China as a unified country. China gets about half of its oil from the Middle East. The Chinese Navy is COMPLETELY incapable of protecting that oil flow. With satellite reconnaissance to track Chinese tankers, stopping them well beyond the Chinese Navy's effective range is easy. And that's assuming the Middle Eastern oil producers didn't join sanctions against China. Without that oil, China doesn't have enough fuel to plant crops, feed stocks to make fertilizers and pesticides to grow crops, of fuel to harvest and distribute what they DO harvest. Think half a billion dead of famine in 12 months. Of all of America's enemies, I worry about China the least.

In seven of the last eight Presidential elections, Americans have chosen the less globalist candidate. Clinton beat Bush I and Dole. Dubya beat Al Gore and Kerry. Obama beat McCain and Romney. Trump beat Hillary. NEITHER Trump nor Biden is, by any stretch of the imagination, globalist. Americans are tired of being the world's policeman, and sending all our good jobs overseas, to prop up an Order that is obsolete.

Metals like chrome, vanadium, and molybdenum don't make the steel (steel is just iron and the right amount of carbon), they make the steel better. Harder, tougher, more rust-resistant. Copper is the difference between silver, which is too soft to be durable, and sterling silver, which is much more durable. Copper is also alloyed with gold to make jewelry more durable. A 24kt gold ring will wear out. An 18kt gold ring can be handed down to your grandchildren. So could we get by without the more esoteric metals? Yes, but they make a lot of things work better.

  42. If we no longer have them hanging on our coattails, dragging us down, there's no limit to what we can do. We're self-sufficient in food and energy. We have some of the best engineers on the planet. We have the best internal water transportation AND one of the best highway networks, to move goods. We have better demographics than most of Europe and Asia, and if we need more people, we have so many people wanting to move here that they don't bother to do it legally. What does France have to offer us? Overpriced wine and smelly cheese? The Germans make decent cars, but increasingly, they make them here.

  45. I'm curious how China is affected by this in the long term. China's banking system functions basically by printing massive quantities of money. If sanctions on China cut it off from the international banking system, China would obviously be hosed, but how much will the mere possibility of a cutoff hurt China?

  46.  @wisenber  The Chinese have, on occasion, tried to open the Yuan up and make it exchangeable for other currencies. Every time they do, everybody in China converts their Yuan to dollars and moves them offshore. It rarely lasts more than a week at a time. The Yuan is trash.

  47. Regarding Social Security, a bargain was made with Americans that if they worked and contributed to the system, they would be taken care of in retirement. NOBODY in government wants to be Darth Vader saying, "I'm altering our bargain. Pray I don't alter it further." That would be the political equivalent of diving into the Sun without a spacesuit for anyone who voted for it. Social Security may have been a dumb deal, but the deal was made. And if it's not kept, the consequences for any political party that breaks it would be catastrophic. Dubya got the GOP into serious trouble for even TALKING about privatizing Social Security.

Still not great, but better. Any political party that pushes for significant SS cuts will be exterminated in the next election. The Boomers are the largest generation in American history. And if you start throwing them out of their homes, they'll move in with their Millennial kids. The Millennials are the second largest generation in American history, and having Mom move back in with them is gonna turn them on you, too. Do the country a favor, and convince Democrats to cut SS. Once the country throws them out, we might be able to get our country back.
