@cardinalRG Indeed, and it's not as though this is anything new. We've charted the distances between the continents pretty accurately for more than two hundred years now. There's simply no way to fit these distances onto a flat map., but they fit a globe perfectly. You must deny large parts of the real world to believe that the Earth is flat.

@darcymr353 Who else could?
3
@darcymr353 I know, it's almost impossible to be more outrageous than some of them really are.
3
Does "checking" in your case perhaps involve watching lots of flat Earther videos on YouTube?
3
And your evidence for this is- what? Some prankers exist, but they don't shell out cash for flat Earth books, DVDs, and conferences.
3
Flat Earthers have their own math.
3
No need to look at the Earth from a distance to deduce it must be round. The Greeks figured it out more than two thousand years ago.
3
@MrSirhcsellor I'm told that I'm not religious because I want to wallow in my sins.
3
I looked for myself. One sunset shows that the Earth cannot be flat.
3
As far as the shape of the Earth goes, though, this is completely beside the point, even if it were true. Anyone of normal intelligence can demonstrate for themselves that the Earth is a globe. No scientific consensus, NASA, or British Academy of Sciences necessary. Just a sundial. Or a sextant. Or watching the shadows on the Equinoxes.
3
Proving the Earth to be a globe was not his point here- we've known that for over two thousand years. This was about the psychology of flat Earthers.
3
You're forgetting the seven million laser-armed NASA-trained penguins.
3
@MGTOWwithGOD The nice thing about being decoupled from reality is that anything goes. But I'll still take reality, thanks.
3
Flat Earthers say we simply can't see that far, because of the atmosphere, and they are right. Light going through air eventually gets scattered, making objects more than a couple hundred miles away invisible. But that begs a question they can't answer: if things gradually fade away in the distance (as they demonstrably do), why can we see a clear horizon at all? Unless we're right next to the edge, there should never be a clear horizon on a flat Earth, because things would just fade away- light doesn't suddenly stop at some point.
3
@ericasahrae Relax. No one is accusing you of being a flat Earther. When I was in elementary school (in the fifties), we also heard the story that Columbus sailed to prove the Earth was round, although I don't recall hearing that from teachers. But actually, educated people (including Columbus) have known the Earth is a globe for more than two thousand years. Columbus did get the size wrong, though- he thought the Earth was smaller than Eratosthenes knew it was in 240 BC. cheers from sunny Vienna, Scott
3
No you won't.
3
The Book of Enoch is wrong. And how can you tell what's a "real" photo? Besides, we don't need NASA to know that the Earth is not flat. One sunset shows it.
3
@Zripas Yep. Should we also give a "fair chance" to those who believe in Tinkerbell or unicorns?
3
The UN uses a flat projection of the globe as a logo because logos need to be flat.
3
@connortracy9544 Where is down? Why is down down?
3
Level and flat are not the same thing.
3
Flat Earthers don't question the system, they deny the evidence.
3
@dr.reubenbuthello2866 Seek and ye shall find. cheers from sunny Vienna, Scott
3
I tried to debunk Eric Dubay, politely, on his 200 Proofs several years ago. He deleted me. One sunset shows that the Earth cannot be flat. No Dubay, deceptions, or CGI necessary.
3
@Uvin-n5v No, actually, the modern flat Earth movement was started by Samuel Rowbotham, a quack doctor and fundamentalist Christian, with his 1881 book Zetetic Astronomy, or the Earth Not A Globe. And the biblical source of his claims is a lot older than the Qur'an.
3
Flying upside down is also costly because it's so inefficient.
3
Who cares? Er, pilots. Navigators. Astronomers. Geologists. Biologists. Physicists. Anyone who is interested in the way things are in the world. I guess you don't fit in any of these categories.

One sunset shows that the Earth cannot be flat.
2
Yes... except that flat Earthers are not challenging orthodoxy in a scientific way, but in an infantile way. That's of no use to anyone.
2
It's not known who first theorized that the Earth is a globe. But it was pretty well established more than two thousand years ago in ancient Greece and probably elsewhere.
2
sparehead said it. Also- I spent years on the FES forum. They were founded by, and are still administrated by (afaik) "real" flat Earthers, but the forum has long since been largely taken over by joking globies. I doubt any government on Earth, even that of North Korea, is interested in trying to garner or alter the minds of flat Earthers.

Pizza dough is not twirled at one revolution per 24 hours, twice as slow as the hour hand of a clock. The Earth is a tiny bit fatter at the Equator (oblate), as Newton predicted, but we are a long way from being a pizza. The force of the rotation is just enough to make things weigh about 0.3% less at the Equator than at the Poles. Gravity is far more powerful than the centrifugal force, so the Earth is within 0.3% of a perfect sphere. Where's your math?
2
@FlatEarth-ps8qm The first photos of the edge of the Earth from space, clearly showing the curve, were taken by the captured V-2 rocket No.13 in 1946. Tell me about the state of CGI then.
2
That's why the edge is guarded by seven million laser-armed NASA-trained penguins. They are paid in fish and don't get dental.
2
Nowadays, many flat Earthers claim that the Sun, Moon, other planets, and stars, are all just "lights in the sky".
2
@kellyname5733 2/10 for the "fake rapture" and "UFOs are holograms", which are new to me. But everything else is old hat. About lunar gravity- you've already got some good advice here. I'll just add, that Isaac Newton was the first to estimate the strength of lunar gravity, by means of estimating the mass of the Moon by way of the tides on the Earth. It has to be said that his estimate was not very accurate, but it was improved upon, and by about a hundred years ago we knew the acceleration of gravity on the Moon pretty accurately.
2
If they want to have a better chance of hitting their targets, yes.
2
Conspiracies are like Lay's potato chips: you can't eat just one.
2
@OSUBucknado Show us where NASA says their photos are "all CGI by necessity".
2
@Matuse Perhaps, just as what flat Earthers consider to be perspective should be called flerspective, what they consider research should be called flersearch.
2
As warmachineuk said. You should be able to find your elevation (height above sea level) online. Just search for "elevation (my location)".
2
Einstein never said that.
2
I sleep better at night, when it's dark. A flat Earth would have no night.
2
@Zripas Sometimes it's impossible to tell.
2
@tjjones621 He's a legend in his own mind.
2
What's even sadder is that they vote.
2
@187211undisputed Actually, we've known the Earth is a globe since before the Moon landings- since before the New Testament was written, in fact.
2
Water, like all fluids, flows and bends to conform to the forces it's subject to. No water is truly flat.
2
Nonsense. There are many simple observations anyone can make that fit the globe and not a flat Earth. Build an equatorial sundial. Take the altitude of Polaris from three different latitudes. Watch the shadows on the Equinoxes.
