  6. I have chosen just to focus on Ukraine. I think many people need to do that. There is a lot of attention on Israel/Gaza, and the Middle East. Since I am more familiar with Ukraine and Russia, I stand with Ukraine. We can stop misunderstandings, call out disinformation, and we need not just «wait and see».

  7. Following some updates from russian vlogs it is my impression that Ruzzians do not have any model of losing with grace, like admitting a failure and being a good sport. Handling a loss seems to be impossible to some. No appreciation of the life values they have recently enjoyed. Some of it seems suicidal. When that is a driving force, it needs to be talked about, as there usually is ambivalence against dying for any person who has some survival instinct.

  29. I remember learning about the Chernobyl catastrophe on the radio, and in the newspaper. I had a two year old in kindergarten. I was very concerned that the pure wilderness had been damaged. I was even happy that someone I used to know didn’t live to experience it. I also remember not eating fish from inland lakes before the family knew I was pregnant with my second child. I am glad we got through that period, and that scientists found ways to survive, but it was a huge shock.

  31. You are doing good work, Anna. In order not to scare children, or maybe more sinister, make them likely victims, the fairytale depiction of trolls has been sweetened and downplayed. I think that is harmful. . Ukraine seemed far off for years, and what I heard from Ukraine before the war was about Odesa and that fatal street fight, as well as other things that don't look good. Not that everything has to look good on the surface, that is untrue, but there needs to be a balance. Bad events can be spread as rumors, and when most people know little about the country, it can be terribly destructive. When I read comments like "Ukraine does not exist" I realized something was off.

  33. I had no idea of how magnificent Kyiv is. It was a name on our old radio-set, it was a place where the poet Irina Ratushinskaia lived with her husband on Batievoy mountain. .. traffic, nightclubs.. a place Kurkov described in his famous novel. .. I’d like to come and see Kyiv as tourist too.

  37. Kherson impressed my by their non violent demonstrations against the invaders. In Gorbachev’s era, that would have been enough. The invasion would not had happened at all, probably. You don’t mess with ukrainians, even though I find them very considerate in many aspects.

  48. I believe the keeping of the name Engels, is likely nostalgic, or nobody cared about changing it,. My impression of current RF is not very communist, but it is definitely authoritarian and repressive, so I guess that has to be explained a bit more in depth. Fascism with its celebration of the strong leader, the centralization of power and riches, its fascination with violence etc. has been suggested by many. Many have pointed out that RF leaders and talking heads have been projecting their own vices onto Ukraine. As to Greenland, Panama, and Canada, be on guard. If the upcoming president gets free reign.. Ukrainians know by now. I think many voted for him for the sake of change, and because he speaks in a way that does not intimidate them.
