  1. We didn't get a vote on the Common Market in 1972. Ted Heath took us into the EEC (European Economic Community) in 1973, no questions asked. When the Labour Government came in, Harold Wilson thought a Referendum would be necessary for such an important issue, and the Referendum in 1975 was about staying in or coming out. The generation who had fought in the Second World War were almost all supporters of a more united Europe. We were told it was about economic advantage - political integration and loss of sovereignty were never mentioned - except by Barbara Castle, Tony Benn and Enoch Powell. Treaty after treaty then effected the motto and mission statement of Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman in the late 1940s: 'Ever Closer Union'.

  10. Miriam Cates has a Private Members' Bill to make it a criminal offence to conceal teaching material from parents, especially relating to sex/relationship education. Some people think that, in light of the heavy workload of teachers, Heads, and indeed parents, it would be better to do away with these subjects in schools altogether, and confine the teaching of sex education to biology lessons - ie THE FACTS, and leave the rest to parents.

  23. What worries me is that judges just don't seem to get it! For example, what the first judge said to Maya Forstater: 'Such beliefs [that in mammals sex is binary and that it cannot be changed] are not worthy of a democratic society'. This verdict was overturned on appeal.

  24. Fiona, I am totally in sympathy with you. I am afraid you will have to do 'temp' work or freelance work. My experience of the latter is that I worked day and night, and had to take two weeks off twice a year just to sleep. Keep on telling like it is! You are not alone! Best of luck!

  29. Sorry, Philip and Rafe, London is not that bad. Schoolchildren on the bus may be irritating and immature - they are not adults - but I have never found them to be dangerous or scary. Also, I have not felt the Tube to have an atmosphere of violence.

I get the impression from this verdict - as a completely lay person - that if you have already been defamed by enough people (how many are required - would two be enough?), then that makes it impossible for you to be further defamed, as you now have no reputation to lose. We could not have pursued the Falklands Conflict without the Americans lending us the use of their Marisat satellite serving the Southern Hemisphere (we do not have a satellite in the Southern Hemisphere). It was also helpful to have bought from them Sidewinder missiles, and to have the Chileans tying up Argentina's most highly trained troops in the Andes. None of this detracts one iota from the professionalism and endurance displayed by the British troops in recapturing the islands. However, I wonder if we would get the same cooperation now - also, remembering our depleted armed forces.

And, please excuse me, Dr Heydell-Mankoo, feminists are extremely concerned about all these matters, not only for Muslim immigrant women in Britain, but also for the possible implications for the native population. We look at Afghanistan and know that this is true Islam, with Shariah. Memorandum: a couple of weeks ago the Taliban in Afghanistan banned women and girls from training as nurses and midwives. Given that women in Afghanistan are not permitted to be examined or treated by male doctors, nurses or paramedics, how on Earth will they get any treatment if they are ill? And last week, the Taliban banned windows.
