  3. Thank heavens I don't have TV. I really resent Hollywood - and therefore Americans - taking their fictionalised versions of history as fact, through ignorance. You see this in many films, eg the implication that Americans were responsible for finding the Enigma machine and cracking the code in Operation Ultra - forget Bletchley Park, also the rescue of works of art in the Second World War, etc. Fiction being presented to me as fact is my definition of lies.

It's perfectly possible to be a feminist in the traditional sense, and still see the necessity of keeping teenage boys out of girls' lavatories (it is AGAINST THE LAW for schools not to do this); to keep male murderers and rapists who are pretending to be women out of female prisons and psychiatric wards; to protect women's sports; and to prevent the indoctrination, poisoning and mutilation of children. I think it was J-P Sartre who said that evil arises when the concrete is made abstract.

He was speculating that the points of light that we call stars could possibly be Suns, some even with planets revolving round them! Well, this was too much for the Church, and he was put to death. The Catholic Church formally apologised for its treatment of Galileo late in the twentieth century (I can't remember the exact date). I don't think they have ever apologised for their treatment of Giordano Bruno, although the number of 'exoplanets' found in other solar systems is now more than four thousand, and counting.

The BBC also did a great Radio 4 two-episode adaptation of Nicholas Montserrat's epic novel, 'The Cruel Sea' in which he told about his experience in the Atlantic Convoys and the Arctic Convoys.

There was no mention of the Al-Qaida manual, no mention of ricin, no mention of his conversion to Islam, and no mention of the details of the crime, or of the perpetrator's previous record of behaviour. The impression was that a young man had stabbed three girls to death. That was it.
