With Bismarck / PE travelling at high speed during the Denmark Strait encounter, the following heavy cruisers had only a few knots speed advantage to close in, HMS Norfolk did fire a few salvoes towards the end of the engagement, but they were effectively still out of practical firing range. In addition due to Holland's radio silence in Hood / PoW prior to the interception it was very difficult for Wake-walker in HMS Norfolk to coordinate his cruisers actions with those of Hood / PoW. This lack of communications and coordination is one of the factors that with hindsight Lancelot Holland could be potentially criticised for, but it would appear that he hoped to surprise the Germans while also " crossing their 'T' ". He succeeded in the former, but failed in the latter.

  8. The "Queen Elizabeth" being referred to was the wife of King George VI (Elizabeth née Bowes-Lyon) Who was at that point titled "Queen Elizabeth"... and after the ascension to the throne of her daughter Queen Elizabeth II she was titled "Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother".

  9. My father was onboard the RN heavy cruiser HMS Dorsetshire at the time of the Bismarck saga. They had been escorting a British convoy from Freetown in Sierra Leone to the UK, and had detached from the convoy escort to intercept Bismarck... for a time it appeared that Dorsetshire might be the last RN ship able to intercept the German battleship, and Capt Martin of Dorsetshire announced to the crew over the ship's tannoy system, that he intended to close on Bismarck and if necessary RAM HER to prevent it from reaching France. Luckily for dad & the rest of the ship's crew the Fleet Air Arm Swordfish put a torpedo into Bismarck's rudders and removed the need for such drastic action by Dorsetshire.

And yet those other pre-industrial military forces managed to cross it succesfully. But I'll give it to you that by mentioning the modern industrial age you're getting closer to what REALLY stopped the German invasion of Britain. It's fun getting people to enlighten themselves.

The English Channel that makes the UK an island, has existed for approximately 10,000 years, (since the end of the last ice age) and so was still a barrier to those pre-industrial European empires I mentioned above, but I'll give it to you that by your mentioning the "modern industrial age" you're getting closer to what was the ACTUAL reason for the German's inability to invade the UK. While its true that battlecruisers were not designed to confront battleships, HMS Hood, as a result of the type's poor showing at Jutland in WW1, was an evolution of the original battlecruiser idea. After her redesign on the stocks at John Brown shipyard in Glasgow she sported battleship armour and firepower, but was 7-8 knots faster than all contemporary battleships. Franco EXPRESSLY declined to join the Fascists and allowed only the "Blue division" to fight in Spain as a "Thank you" for the fascist assitance provided to it during the Spanish civil war. Franco KNEW that his country depended more on US support than it did German, hence his refusal to be drawn into the axis.

You mean the ones that weren't suitable for operations in the Atlantic and especially the Mediterranean because of their flimsy wooden decks and lack of armour? Hence why virtually no US aircraft carriers entered the Mediterranean until 1944. The British fleet carriers had been operating under heavy axis air attack in the Med from 1940 - 44.
