  2. More of the same uninformed nonsense. Here's some more of the "history that is never talked about". 1. Britain still thanks Poland at every remembrance day parade across the country to this day. We appreciate the 58.5 confirmed kills that 303 Sqd contributed to the 2900 luftwaffe aircraft destroyed during the Battle of Britain, incl the 17 scored by the Czechoslovakian ace Josef František who flew with 303 Sqd. Also take note that 303 sqd were not "all Polish pilots", as well as Josef František I've already mentioned, the squadron commander and most of the flight commanders were British during the battle of Britain. 2. With regard to the 1946 Victory parade when it came to Britain handing out the national invites to all of the countries that had fought on the side of the Allies in WW2, The British Labour government of Clement Attlee handed the Polish invitation to the Warsaw based Polish provisional government of national unity (which was after all the official government of Poland, as recognised by the United Nations). The now effectively powerless & stateless nationalist Polish government in exile based in London took great offence at their sidelining in this matter, and raised a torrent of indignation that was backed by many British MPs and ordinary people. A few days before the parade was due to take place a belated invitation was sent both to the Polish Govt in Exile in London as well as directly to various Polish generals who had fought with the allies, ALL of who felt so disgusted with the perceived disrespect shown by the INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY (I.E being made to play "second fiddle" to the official Warsaw Polish government) that they CHOSE not to attend the parade. And the final ignomy? The Soviet backed Warsaw government neither acknowledged the British invite, or attended the parade either. Britain sacrificed 450000 of her citizens in a war started to aid Poland which, due to her quick conquest, evolved into a meatgrinder of a war to topple her oppressors. At war's end it was the treachery of Britain's "enemy's enemy" (Josef Stalin) that strangled any possibility of a postwar democratic Poland. The western allies were reluctant to start WW3 in a central Europe already bled white by 6 years of murderous tyranny and warfare, a WW3 entailing probably millions more deaths that would have been necessary to remove the 12.4 million strong red army from the countries of Eastern Europe. Oops, Bi Ling !!! You've forgotten to tell us how YOU would have removed the 12.4 million strong red army from central & Eastern Europe?

German troops Invaded Norway on the 9th April 1940, the first British troops in response landed on the 13th April 1940. You can't seem to get ANYTHING right, can you Jeremarkyjames.

  14. There were NO luftwaffe bombers pounding Ottawa, Canberra or New Delhi. The British Isles stood alone as the last bastion of democracy in Europe against the merciless attacks of totalitarianism. We were ably supported by commonwealth troops, and gave refuge to defeated Europeans, but without Great Britain standing firm and alone, all the commonwealth troops and refugees in the world would not have been able to act as the springboard for the future liberation of Europe.

  17.  @CB-fz3li  I find that when you put your case forward in these sections, that over time a well reasoned point of view gains traction, and while I never expect to change an "MSM droid's" opinion, I'm never afraid to challenge their nonsense, I do quite often notice that points I raise and phrases I use start to appear in other comments, and so appear to be read by others who are undecided on the matter. Keep up your own good work.

The Nelson class were far superior to Bismarck in armour AND firepower, only their speed was inferior, but that was the price of keeping to international naval treaties, something that never hindered the Germans (and was something the Americans with their WW2 designs never had to contend with). But the Nelson's lower speed was not the impediment it seemed, with the RN being the pioneers of naval aviation & aircraft carrier usage it had trained its fleet air arm to attack enemy capital ships with the intention of slowing then down to allow its superior battleships to intercept and engage. That strategy almost worked as planned in the case of Vittorio Veneto at the battle of cape Matapan in Mar 1941, and worked to perfection in the case of Bismarck.

  27. While I fully agree that Dowding was the defensive genius facing the air assault on the UK, Britain was in no real danger of being invaded. The air assault was only the first step of the planned invasion. The wehrmacht with its tiny navy and air force that couldn't even prevent the evacuation of Dunkirk then had to deal with the world's largest navy. The invasion was NEVER going to happen.

Complete BS James, Churchill had been railing against nazism since at least 1933.... but seeing as he held NO office within the British government in the 1930s he exerted utterly no influence on British foreign policy. It was only his appointment as first lord of the admiralty on 3rd Sept 1939 that ended what is commonly known as Churchill's "wilderness years" from 1929-39.

  32. The Story is that Captain Lindemann was of that opinion, and the crew happily took it "on board", but any reference I've seen to Bismarck in surviving wartime documents used the feminine "Die" as opposed to the male "Der", it is purely a matter of personal preference.

Swordfish made from bits and pieces from granny's "sewing box", and went on to become the most effective naval attack aircraft of WW2. German technology indeed.

  45. Er.....If were talking about the "luck" factor, then what about Bismarck's hit on HMS Hood? In 99 out of 100 reruns HMS Hood completes her turn to port, draws parallel to Bismarck and the two ships then proceed to cripple or sink one another meaning Bismarck doesn't even make it as far as the open North Atlantic, and so no airstrike would have been needed. Britain had since the 1920s planned the use of its carrier aircraft to strike and at least slow down (if not sink) any enemy fast ships to allow the RN capital ships to close and engage. The Bismarck episode was NOT the first time this tactic had worked. Read about the earlier "Battle of Cape Matapan" in the Mediterranean where Fleet air arm aircraft had done the same to the Italian battleship "Vittorio Veneto". The Swordfish was one of the most successful naval attack aircraft of WW2. ALL nationalities aerial torpedoes were of lesser size than their shipborne counterparts.

  46.  @muttley00  Well I live and learn. My torpedo knowledge is far from encyclopaedic... I have read about US aerial torpedoes but had not spotted the diameter of the Mk XIII. I fired off a rogue line and was found out. Thank you for pointing out my error. Yes the heyday of Torpedo bombers did come and go relatively quickly, and I would not have swapped places with any of their aircrews for all the tea in China. Oh yes it was the Germans bombing the innocent civilians of Liege in August 1914, then the London zeppelin blitz throughout WW1, then widespread murder of innocents by the fledgling luftwaffe's "Kondor Legion" in the Spanish civil war, followed by Weilun, Warsaw, Rotterdam, and various British towns and cities before a SINGLE British bomb had been dropped on Germany.
