  1. Twice I had the little rubber ends of my manual shift PT Cruiser break. Once by the shift inside and once outside like this one. I was pleasantly surprised to realize just a rubber bushing could be the problem and not some internal transmission issue.

  3. 11:57 looking at the two camshafts, there is a hole on the left side, closest to the timing belt. Both camshafts, exhaust and input have it. The fact that they are aligned with each other, facing the same way, is hopeful. If they were not, then the exhaust and intake camshafts have been misaligned. There is a pin in the timing belt side of those shafts that keeps them in sync with the timing belt pulleys. In some cases those pins will brake or shear off if not torqued down properly and then the two camshafts will turn out of sync. Hoping the timing belt teeth shaved off and no valve damage was done. Being a semi-interference engine, only the exhaust valves will strike the piston and get bent. So with the smoke test if that is the case, there will be smoke leaking out of the exhaust side, but not on the input side, when both shafts are removed and allow all the valves to be in the closed position.

  5. Having attempted transmission repair on my Dodge Dakota 4.7L, I confirmed my earlier thinking that transmissions were for specialists. I replaced a valve body, thinking it would solve the problem. It didn't. I opened it a second time with my grandsons help and still couldn't get it figured out. I put it in the transmission shop and they did a rebuild and it still came down to a bad computer. I paid them, they sent me home to get the computer replaced, they didn't do those. I did find a shop online that sold them and they use your vin to program them to work right with your vehicle. That was a simple matter of unplugging the old one and plugging in the new one. That solved the problem. In retrospect, my transmission and valve body might have been just fine and it only needs a few hundred dollar computer versus $3000 worth of transmission work and a new computer. If an honest expert had checked it, such as Ray, it might have been revealed in the engine codes and problem solved. I will attempt most any other work on a vehicle, except a transmission job.

  7. I kept waiting to see how you were going to line that belt up around the tensioner pulley. You seemed tuned into the belt and the tensioner, so I kept thinking you knew something I didn't, then you realized. Sometimes the camera sees so much more. And then the other thousands of eyes that watch your every move.

  8. I had the same situation with my PT Cruiser. Finally had to remove the pin by knocking it out and then taking the bolt loose outside of the car. The nut was tack welded to the assembly, so the bolt side has to be loosened. It was a pain though and very hard spot to work. Had to do it twice because the new steering gear began leaking after a week and I had to replace it under warranty.

  11. Wow! What the heck? I have to say I've been wondering how you were able to do these videos on company time. It had me wondering to the point of almost emailing you to ask. I don't yet know the reason for this, just speculating on my thoughts. Having gotten addicted to your channel, I am interested in what your next move is. Up here in Virginia, we could use an honest, skilled tech to work on cars. Which is why I've taken to fixing my own and tuning into YouTube's to help. Your channel had some videos that pertained to my cars, but I've tuned in more for the entertainment factor. Good luck Ray.   12. 24:21 I bought a plastic repair gun, basically like a soldering iron with flat tips and ways to use different clips to melt into the plastic. I think that could have repairs that broken plastic tab from the grill that is mounted with, I believe a 10mm. Maybe not critical, but might just give you that above and beyond type repair, even if no one noticed it.

  17. I have this same Kia and my first experience was these alarms. The person that had it, sold it cheap. I went after an O2 sensor and it was my first intro into O2 sensors, fuel trims and date showing before and after the catalytic converter. I finally had a mobile mechanic work in it and did a tune-up. Because the plugs are in the firewall side of the engine and require removing the intake to get to them, only the front plugs had been changed, probably in it's lifetime. So he did the intake removal and new plugs and did a good throttle body cleaning. That took care of the check engine light and the car was very responsive after that. It also opened my eyes to just cleaning the throttle body and intake manifolds of all the carbon. I'm doing my PT Cruiser right now. Started as a radiator hose replacement, but so far I've done the whole throttle body, intake and intake manifold, right to the engine input where the valves are visible. Plus replacing the vacuum and pcv valve. One hose was completely blocked between the intake and the vacuum brake booster. Soon I will have a lot of the old, cracked rubber and plastic parts replaced. Can't wait to see how it runs after.

  19. Dang, I wish it wasn't so far from Virginia to get to your shop. I would drop off my Dodge Dakota 4x4 4.7l V8 to replace the oil pan gasket. I just finished doing the valve covers, not bad. But it looks like the oil pan gasket requires pulling the engine or dropping the front differential and axle and even then to clear the cross member, the engine might have to be lifted. I can hardly believe that a gasket that will fail fairly often in the vehicular world, has to be such an outlandish job to take on.

  22. 47:00 I have to wonder with exhausts and high heat areas where bolts not only just snap off randomly, they practically weld themselves metal to metal. Why haven't engineers figured out a way to build these components to handle the heat and corrosive environment so that these things don't happen. I can't imagine similar things happening to aircraft or rocket ships. Is it just a cost factor? They must have the science figured out.

  23. My 2001 PT suddenly wouldn't start. Did the troubleshooting through the starter relay, there are a few similar ones to swap out, so that's pretty easy, even without a voltmeter. I setup a long metal rod to reach the solenoid and voltage was present. So I applied battery voltage, via the rid, directly to the starter side of the solenoid and it cranked. Being that they are sort of a one piece thing, not like the old days where you fix them, I replaced the starter and it works great. I also had a lot of after market led lights, sound systems, alarms and bling on the car. It was previously a show car. It would die every three days if not started. I think it was pulling about 60 milliamps from the battery in the off position and so I disconnected about every aftermarket item and it seems okay. I bought it and it just had a bad battery after sitting for three years in a garage. Since the new battery, I ended up with a second new battery from the constant discharge and sitting discharged. Happy to say it's running good today with 220,000+ miles on it.

  25. Taking that last bolt off the top, is like climbing up a mountain. You get the steps figured out in one direction, but sometimes the reverse trip is much harder than anticipated. Haven't watched that part, I may be commenting prematurely.

  27. Every mechanics shop should have a tow truck available to help with customer service, but it can be a bit expensive if not being used. It looks like you may need another semi mechanic/helper/tow truck driver soon. There is a lot about the business that requires someone's attention and yours are best used in the garage wrenching. Looks like another aspect of the Wife Unit may be coming up.

  29.  @aliasfred  I actually tore it half apart to do that a couple years ago and when I saw the belt was new looking it sat for a few years in my garage. I finally got on it with my grandson and put it back together. This was before I would have to mess with the belt and everything to get to the water pump. I probably should have continued on and did it, but I just wanted it out of the garage. This job is just the hoses, flushing the system and replacing squeaky belts. I just need to get enough mileage to get my grandson through school. He uses it to go to aircraft mechanic school about 45 minutes away and graduates this summer.

  30. All those whining and ticking noises are just the bearings and such, filing each other down to match. That works best when running only a quart of oil. That way the metal can wear down faster. Then when you change the oil to remove all the filings, it will run perfect with new oil, since everything ground itself down to match its adjoining surface. 😮😮😮😮 Am I serious?? No, just being sarcastic 😊.

  34. It's a year later and today is a heavy rain day in Virginia. I want to work on my cars, but I've fixed most everything over the last few months and they run amazingly. Mostly from watching your videos. The things left to do are minor and I've already spent too much money on my three cars. At least on a rainy day I can watch your videos and m feel like I'm getting something done. I've run out of your new videos to watch, so I have to go back in time.

  35. Probably at least half of my more oddball tools I own, I went and bought after watching Ray. Even a few that looked cool or interesting and I would rarely use them. I'm a tool junkie, just show me how they are used. A few, such as my super and super-duper small ratchet wrenches have come in handy. Phlange wrenches as Ray called it.

  40. Spent many years under dashboards installing and removing two way radios. If everything I still do, the ability to get up under a dash and still focus, was one of the first to go. I first found it physically hard to get in all the positions, then as my close up eyesight deteriorated and I needed glasses, it was still hard to focus. This takes me back to those days.

My reasons for repairing my own cars, trucks, mowers, etc. I'm 65 and not as good as I once was, but as good once as I ever was. lol Kidding aside, I used to give a shop thousands to keep my truck running, but there was always more to be done than I though. I caught them saying my cv axle boot was leaking grease and needed replacement. i decided to do it myself and halfway through, I realized that the grease had been applied somehow to the boot. No cracks or leaks. Since someone else already did the cv axle on the other side. I did it and now know the condition first hand. I've done my own work since then.

  47. What about the tires needing replacement? Yes Ray, go home. The long term effect on a marriage and family can be devastating, when you feel like the customers needs and the bill paying are worth your time more than helping get the kids fed and in bed and time with the wife unit, despite how supportive she is at present, that is not likely to hold true if you always make a point to put work over family. Speaking from experience here.

  49.  @handbananaistherapist642  just setting up to pull the front bumper and dig into the condenser and radiator on my 2004 Dodge Dakota and see how much damage my grandson did rear ending a car. Being the third time, I'm well versed in what to remove. In this case I'm sure a new condenser, fan clutch and electric fan need to be replaced. The bumper cover too, but I've had trouble with getting a bumper that actually fits. I have three that don't fit sitting in the garage now. Insurance is waiting to see just how much work is involved to quote me. I did the second repair without insurance money, hoping to keep the cost down. The first one was under accident forgiveness and I haven't heard what the second one did to premiums yet. Well off to get my grandson started pulling things and filming it for my channel.

  50. Maybe a noise isolating wall on the door side of the compressor to shield the shop from noise the compressor puts out. Knowing that audio for your filming is critical.
