  7. My point is those who argue most against the minimum wage don't have to work for minimum wage. I buy my jeans at Walmart they don't shop there because its lower class and for the masses instead preferring the more expensive stores like Kohls brand. In fact these professors are usually paid out of stock and bond profits in their endowed chairs. The middle class has IRA's and other stuff that have income that is derived from profits. A rise in minimum wage will result in a drop in profits. Naturally if your income or a good part comes from profits your going to have a different view of things.

Or how many people should be allowed to break parking rules without getting parking tickets each year? How many unsolved rape and murders should we allow? Is overstaying a tourist visa any different than crossing the Mexican border at other than a port of entry? If we have a border wall will the government take down the second inland border checkpoints? Do we really need a wall at places that are all but already uncrossable now? Why not build a Canadian wall?

  28. Few wars are meaningless especially those that last 10 years. The Vietnam war took down two presidents. Lyndon Johnson did not seek to run again. Nixon was elected in a landslide of electoral votes from every state but Massachusetts because he promised peace with honor. Nixon resigned before his impeachment trial in the Senate. Senator Rockefeller told him he didn't have the votes. ( He need 34 out of 100 to avoid a guilty finding). The war ended because GI's didn't want to fight anymore. Nixon had two choices end the war or establish a police state at home and draft more soldiers. That war cost 50.000 GI's their lives and 1 million Vietnamese lives. It was condemned across the world with huge protest marches everywhere.

That's where I learned it doesn't make a difference which of the two party candidates is elected. A real street movement is what makes the difference. His expansion of the war into Cambodia, the murder of four Kent State students by the Ohio National guard which resulted in a nationwide student strike had a big effect on young people of the time including me a high school senior. I had little interest in politics before since I thought of it mostly as popularity contests. Ever since then they have tried to rewrite the history of the Vietnam war. For years they talked about it as being a mistake. The only mistake about it was that they lost. The first GI's to come back were frowned upon by business as being soft or losers. Then they decided they needed to change that policy and make everybody into a hero as a way to end any discussion of the war.

  30. People who enter under spousal petitions can get green cards rather quickly since there are no limits on them. Their spouse must be an American citizen and the immigration service must be satisfied that they entered into a true marriage not one of convenience solely to get a green card. The immigrant spouse may work but the citizen spouse must agree to pay all the necessary support costs of the immigrant spouse. People who want to come here under family petition are limited to a certain number each year. This is where the complaint of having to wait in line comes from. The process is slow and bureaucratic and once again you may work after receiving your green card not before but you must be sponsored by citizen family members who agree to pay your cost of living. Then there is the lottery based green card this is limited to people from countries that are underrepresented in immigration like Mongolia. So if you want to read about how to get a green card I suggest going to USCIS website and trying to decipher what is being said. Like the "Green Card for a Lautenberg Parolee" apparently this program ended but was later renewed by Congress but the renewal was not recognized by USCIS.

This of course went on at a place close to the Rio Grande because going more that a few miles away would put you in the desert.

They pay sales taxes and they pay property taxes through their landlord, so the only taxes they might escape is federal and state income taxes because their employer relies on their keeping quiet while paying them in cash. If they are not paying social security tax then they don't receive social security benefits. Now if they received amnesty the lower than minimum wage earners are more likely to demand they be paid minimum wage and the government would collect social security taxes. To receive food stamps you must prove you are legally in the country to begin with. Other than health care through an emergency room they are not eligible for medicaid or medicare. In states that only issue drivers licences to green card holders or US citizens they are more likely not to insure or register automobiles pushing up insurance costs.

  37. The reasons for union job loss in the construction industry are the changes in technologies involved in construction and the inability to organize new workers. The trades had control over the apprenticeship programs thereby guaranteeing union wages for members. The bosses have gotten picketing restrictions imposed by judges that prevent sympathy walkouts. So long as you follow boss law than job loss will follow. Amnesty will help to organize immigrants with or without green cards but as long as you don't organize anyone to begin with job loss will follow. So called 'good' union bosses will be enticed to go nonunion if they can get people who can do the job.

They begin to blame each other and the working class for the contradictions of capitalism. The most important contradictions in Capitalism are the inability of the working class to buy back what it produces, the limited size of the world and so the limited market, and the decline in the rate of industrial profit. The declining rate of industrial profit leads to investment schemes as a new way to create capital without using the surplus value created from industrial profit to create new labor saving machinery.

If there really is "an incentive to get ahead" why do bosses keep the wages of their employees secret? We've already seen how well Bill Clinton's TANF program has done after he and Congress abolished AFDC. They only people with "incentives to get ahead' are managers, CEO's and those who believe the promises from Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. As long as we live under capitalism the biggest slice of pie will go to the ruling class. Sure stop welfare and give the bosses freedom from taxes. Nor do we support Democratic Party politicians even if like Sanders they claim to be socialists. The Socialist Workers Party has run general election candidates since 1948.   44. I have no theory of melting pots. I have theories of freedom. One of those is the theory of limited government and instead of government control of your life for the benefit of others. The US constitution sets up a republic with enumerated powers and limits to that power. Every state has the right to a republican form of government guaranteed by the federal government. The New England small farmers wanted a "Bill of Rights" (the first 10 amendments) to protect them from what they had experienced under Crown Tyranny. These rights were extended and individual states power limited after the civil war with the civil war amendments. English law starts with an all powerful monarch and then limits placed upon the monarch starting with the magna carta.

  46. The other thing is you say if. Well If isn't good enough. You have to have an actual situation. Should Government cemeteries not have symbols of religion on graves? Well no because that is something one expects to find in a cemetery and interference would be considered intolerable but so would limits on which religions could have symbols there. I don't think temporary exhibits should be interfered with as long as others get to have theirs. Neither should government funded libraries or universities with the exception of granting government endorsed religious degrees.

I live in the US and if someone told me that a church was being closed by force by the worshippers of some other religion than it is in the interests of the working class as a whole to see to it that it would be allowed to stay open. Taking any special position of the catholic church in the Irish republic out will do more to unify Ireland than keeping it in. Defending those who want to worship as they please will help that along. No Church closers no Mosque closures no Synagogue closures.
