  2. @nigwasme Nobody in my family who had either Pfizer or Moderna got COVID-19 even once. The only vaccinated people in my family who got sick had the sinovac vaccine, which I would consider pretty much ineffective. The other eight who got sick are antivaxxers. Makes sense, doesn't it? :-)

  5. Yes, he seems to have lost his mind recently and is arguing total bullshit. A look at the South African data shows that there is no zero bottom for COVID-19. Some parts of the world are already building up for the next wave. Even my county, which thanks to the large number of educated people has some of the highest vaccination rates in the world, has seen an uptick over the last week. I still hope that's just a statistical blip, but if not, then the pattern of the disease returning after people are relaxing will be repeating itself.

  7. No, the natural immunity claim is completely false. Eight of my relatives had COVID-19 twice now. A further two had it three times, already. There is no such thing as "natural immunity".

  10. The death rate in the unvaccinated is still high. The death rate in vaccinated and boosted individuals is approaching "reasonable" levels, probably comparable to other forms of pneumonia. Having said that, if you don't want to die at a "reasonable" level of risk, either, then I suggest you distance socially. Nobody ever got this disease from the distance.

What vaccines actually do is to reduce the number of infections that turn a person into an effective vector, therefor they reduce the ability of the microorganism to multiply effectively. Ideally the disease dies out once the entire population has been vaccinated. A natural infection, however, is the very process that generates the vector, hence it enhances the ability of the microorganism to spread. What happens inside the body in either case is completely irrelevant from an epidemiological standpoint. The only question of interest is whether the organism can spread or not. With vaccination it can't, with "natural immunity" (which does not exist to begin with), it can and does.

This natural immunity thing has become like the second coming of Jesus. It's religion, not fact. You have immunity after infection for half a year, maybe a year, then your antibody count is down and the virus has mutated and you are vulnerable, again. Just how hard is that to understand? It was never any different from the flu and the common cold in that regard. It's just a lot more deadly than the flu and the common cold.

By the time you have those it's probably better to call the undertaker and to finish your last will and testament.

  17. I just learned that two of my relatives (not even in the antivaxxer branch) now got COVID-19 for the third time. He was already suffering from long COVID-19 symptoms, by all accounts it really ruined his health and now he got re-infected, most likely by his wife who works with kids in facilities that have not shut down. It's a shame. They are very nice people. For some people neither previous infections nor vaccines provide enough protection. We need far better policies with respect to people who have a naturally weak immune response to this disease.

  30. You should talk to my eight antivaxxer relatives who had COVID-19 for the second time, already. They were all sick for two weeks, again. They didn't have "mild symptoms", either, neither the first nor the second time. And then there is the couple that had it for the third time... he has long COVID-19 symptoms in addition. So much for "natural immunity". Immunity after infection lasts until the antibody counts are too low to protect you. It's that simple.

  31.  @Frillar  This is not "anecdotal" to the folks I know. To them it is dead serious. Either way, as long as people get re-infected, the disease stays around. We have countries where it has already claimed one in two hundred lives. When is enough? One in a hundred? One in fifty? One in ten? What, exactly, are you waiting for? A miracle? God's angels appearing in the sky and inoculating people with god-rays? How did that work out for leprosy and smallpox? Those were cured by us. Smallpox was completely eradicated.

  41. Neither did other variants protect well against omicron. Either way, what little protection previous infections offer, it diminishes quickly over time. There is no realistic prospect for population level natural immunity from what we know.
