  1. I also forgot to say that soft power matters. Soldiers fight when they got something to lose like their freedom and good way of life. And men who are opressed, have no freedom and no standard of living do not have much reason to fight for their country. Having an attractive free country attracts foreign talent. People with big brains or much money. And that could translate to superior economic and military might. But if you an opressive state with no future, then of course will people try to flee from it, like how people fled to the west across the Berlin wall. And jewish scientists fled from Germany and helped USA develop the nuclear bomb before the nazis did. And having well recognized brands also helps the economy. In reality do russia care much about soft power as it spends lots of money on bots to manipulate western public opinion. Its sad really. An empire that now have leader who wants to take back historical lands it had lost in World war 1. Just like uncle Dolphy wanted to retake Germanys historical lands it had lost in World war 1. Stalin did the same. And in the 1990s there was Milosevic in Serbia who tried to reunite old historical lands against the will of the people who lived there in Slovenia, Bosnia, Kosovo and so on. I see it as my goal to end this ideology, and all countries including russia should accept the principles of the Westphalian peace.   17. USA went from an army 100.000 strong in 1940 to a military over 12 million strong 5 years later. They had the best equipped troops in the world. And they could likely have mobilized even more men if they had wanted to, but USA already began their demobilization of their war economy in late 1943. So what is my conclusion? - I think that the west can mobilize massive forces if the political will exist. And just like USA accelerated from 0 to 100 kilometers and hour in world war 2, can the west do the same now if the political will exist. Indeed, with all machinery and industrial robots could mobilizing 12 million americans for war be easier today than it was back in the 1940s.

  21. I think that torpedos have much been replaced by anti-ship missiles already. And "the nice thing" about a submarine is that it is stealthy, the enemy cannot find it. And even if he managed to destroy every city and military base in America in one first strike, could this single submarine with its enormous firepower launch their nukes and destroy every large city in the enemy country and get revenge. So it is an enormous deterence in a way I don't think a drone can be. And it cannot be taken over by cyberattacks, or getting taken out by electronic warfare cutting off electronic signals. I am no expert, but regarding the ocean gate submarine did I hear that it is not possible to do any internet communication deep down in the ocean either. So its not possible to have a drone then steering around at those depths.

  22. They are good to have I guess, aircrafts can sink ships too but China also have lots of planes. Landbased anti-ship missiles are good at preventing China from landing troops and tanks on Taiwan. Also uboats and surface ships can sink Chinese landing ships. However drone boats and land based missiles are probably the best ways to fend off an amphibious invasion. Unlike missiles can maritime drones do reconainaissance and search and rescue operations. And stealthy drones can do precision strikes and be harder threat for the enemy to remove.

  25. The problem is that when you lose million after million people will start to protest. Especially if the economy went to into the garbage. And no if it had been easy to get men from elsewhere to fight for Russia, then Putin would have already used that option. Losses are going up for Russia as less and less modern equipment, ammunition is left available and the quality of their troops is falling as better trained troops dies off and leaves only rookies left to fight.

  27. Russia did strangle their energy supply to Europe before this pipeline was blown. The plan was so put pressure on Berlin. Russia would still get some energy income while Germany would get less gas than normal so it would be unable to stock up gas for the next winter and be fearful of freezing to death the next winter unless it gave up its support for Ukraine. In order to do this did Russia blame "technical problems" with their pipeline that prevented them from sending all the energy they had agreed to in their contracts with Germany. So the Russians lied and made up a bullshit reason for not keeping their promise, while not saying it outright that they did not deliever to Germany what they promised simply because they didn't want to. It all reminds me of how Stalin tried to rob Berlin from the western world by blockading all road transports of food to the city. And they said that they had no bad intents then either.. the food could not reach Berlin because of "technical problems" back then too. And blowing up the pipeline and cutting off all gas to Germany was perhaps a signal to the leaders in Berlin and a way to try to scare Europe about a big coming energy crisis, while at the same time being careful to not looklike an aggressor in German eyes so that the German people who was still feeling 50%/50% divided over if they should support Ukraine or not, would not became angry on Russia if they refused to give Germany any gas. However this move was stupid. And it seems like Russia have managed to take the football and kick it into their own goal with this dumb move. The last dreams of getting Germany back on Russian gas dependence are now dead.

And they have won battle after battle in this war so far: Hostomel, Kyiv, Sumy, the 4 battles at Siverskyi Donets, Charkiv, Snake island, Khersun, Vuhledar, Avdiivka and so on. Ukrainian troops do get too little weapons and too late, but still have they managed to kick russian ass in battle after battle. Russian missile attacks against hydroelectric powerplants, which could signify a repeat of of the Novo Kahovka dam collapse. That was a defensive action, but perhaps is it also a move russia want to make to save troops in one are to move to another area for an attack. 2. Russia do not care about training, or smart use of their resources. They rather just wanna create a flow that they hope somehow would push the Ukrianians back and make them lose ground and manpower. This is of course not a smart way of using resources. But Putin doesn't seem to care. Trading land for lives is something that he is willing to do. He do not value the lives of convicts, ethnic minorities, mercenaries, and Ukrainians forcefully conscripted into DPR and LPR amies. So he happily continues to make meatwaves. 3. Putins strategy is winning the war by Trump. And if Trump wins, then he hopes that Europe just gives up and throws in the towel as well. And that is possible, and especially so if rightwing populists wins seats in the EU election. Putin is therefore not hoping the counter-offensive to break the Ukrainian defensive lines. But rather just to keep the pressure up to show the world that he holds the iniative to demoralize people in the west that are sitting on the fence, and to give a morale boost to the pro-russians around the world. Russias real offensive will not come now. It will come after the west have given up their support for Ukraine. And when Ukraine lose their access to patriot missiles and 155mm artillery shells, then will russia attack with full force and force Ukraine to sign a catastrophically bad peace deal.

  42. Germany and France recently voted for pro-russian nazis in the EU election. Southern Europe (Spain and Italy) does not care much about Ukraine. Slovakia, Hungary and Austria are pro-Russian. Belgium is also pretty pro-russian like France and Germany. Sweden, Denmark and the Baltics have already given away all what they have to Ukraine. Poland have become more half-assed in supporting Ukraine and do very little to stop the truckers from blocking the road. And Britain no longer got any Boris Johnson to help Ukraine. So I not expect any large aid packages from Europe. At best might they get more artillery ammunition in the future, and perhaps Poland could give a few of those thousands of vehicles they have bought. Norway and Finland could perhaps give a little more. While Spain, Turkey and Greece could give a few armored vehicles since they already have so many, and those they have are already so old that it could be sensible to replace them with something newer. Leopard1, M-60 Patton and Leopard2A4 are not exactly what I consider brand new tanks. So if the political will exist, then I believe that trading those vehicles for money, and then sending them to Ukraine would be possible. Then could those countries buy something more modern to replace them. However organising anything revolutionary that could tip the scale in Ukraine seems very unlikely to me. Even more unlikely now when Macron and Scholz are weaker than ever. I hope this does not lead to a permanent block of the shipments of Taurus to Ukraine and some well needed French weapons such as Caesar, Scalp and Mirage 2000.

And one of those ships could have some sensors and help revealing threats to the group. Some people say this war will be determined by a black swan event - like if Germany throws in the towel from high energy prices and stops helping Ukraine and say it needs to talk peace with the Russians even if it means a loss of land, another possible ending of the war could be if the military takes over the power in Russia and get rid of Putin. Your ship can weight 120.000 tonnes and have 2 meters thick armor. But it will still be a vulnerable sitting duck. And big guns are not that useful - because if missiles have a much longer range, and they are not limited by any flat trajetory of naval guns that could make them useless at destroying ground when you want to invade a pacific island. The best protection you can have for a ship today is not armor. It is stealth and being small and fast so they enemy have a difficulty in fiding you and hitting you with his guns. And with a small ship can you hide in shallow waters among the tall grass and launch gerilla warfare raids. And even a small boat that just carry one anti-ship missile can be a deadly threat to a large warship.
