Do you not know that prices are determined by the supply and demand for goods and services? When the government competes with private industry for limited goods and services, it drives up prices. When the government writes checks to everyone, people spend them, fueling demand for goods and services. And when you do that while hampering productivity (supply), you're flirting with hyperinflation. Finally, markets are affected by expectations. Businesses expecting tough times ahead will often raise prices in anticipation of having to weather the storm.
