  27. The gas crisis of '79 halved my parents' tourism business, but they were frugal Depression kids, so they made it okay. I worked to buy my own clothes since age 12 and did not have a car until I saved up for one at 20. Worked my way through college, too. What gets me about the current economy is how much of a racket health care and post-secondary education are, now. At least those two things were fairly affordable the last time the economy was pure crap.

  33. That's what my husband says, being from New Orleans. As for me, it's just something I have been doing for almost 50 years for my family and also at times professionally. It's kind of cute to see Styx try out new skills. I LOL when I realized he meant he'd boiled pasta for the very first time. At first, I assumed that he was actually making the pasta, itself.

  37. I would not go so far as to write off Wisconsin. I have a sense that Wisconsin Democrats have had enough of their party for now. And most of Wisconsin is deep red. My county, which is usually 50/50 R/D, has gone >62% Trump for several seasons, now. I sense the same kind of fed-upedness with Biden that I felt in 1980, when Carter was expected to win but did not. And now we know what kind of honkery to watch for.

  43. My mom survived COVID Classic at 87 and with end-stage COPD. As for me, I trust my immune function. I rarely get sick anymore and am protected by my tendency toward autoimmune disease. Autoimmune problems are just a byproduct of a superior immune response. It's adaptive and protects from infection.
