Some of the old, grizzled Dems remember it, and the left in general did take up the cause, but so did the Republicans. One of the very first national politicians to support Martin Luther King was Richard Nixon, back when he was a senator from California. King himself was a Republican. That NEVER gets mentioned, and Nixon is given no credit for his early political courage and basic human decency about race relations. Because the narrative has been edited to exclude opponents of Democrats.
