  5. My wife is from North East China. When the Russians attacked the Japanese, they treated the Chinese and Koreans in the same way as they treated the people in eastern Europe. Which is why I laugh at Russians who think the PRC is their friend.

  15. Right wing is conservative (maintaining the status quo) or reactionary(going back to a previous status quo. EG back to the USSR) Left wing is desirous or supportive of change. (which might or might not be a good thing. Wanting to cut off three or your own limbs is change, as much as getting rid of child labour in the 19th century) If you're in a liberal democracy (people are allowed to have their own opinions, even if you disagree with them and are allowed to freely vote) then maintaining a liberal democracy is a right wing position. If you're in North Korea, it's very much a left wing position. If you want a single party communist state in the USA, you're left wing (it's a massive change) if you want it in North Korea, it's right wing. Is my view of left wing positions seems a bit biased towards being negative, it's because It's difficult to think of positions in western countries that are universally regarded as left wing and good, because the non controversial stuff has generally already been done.

Then when Hitler had as much as he was going to hope for, he'd have gone right wing (conservative) By the time everything had collapsed, he'd have been very, very reactionary, wishing he could go back to the status quo he had when things were going well. These labels make much more sense if you ignore specific policy positions and look at it from the point of view of their attitude to change. In Australia, gun control is a right wing (conservative) position because it's well and truly part of the status quo. Any party removing it would be debatably left wing (going for a new status quo. EG bringing in a second amendment) or far right reactionary, going back to the status quo before the laws were implemented.

  26. ​ @jettser17UK  it isn't. But the agreement was to leave them alone until 2047. They were part of the PRC, but they governed themselves. It should have been a mostly independent country until then. This treaty was officially labelled a historical document of no modern relevance in 2017 (two years before the protests).

  35. Because every lender to the USA knows that it can and will pay when the debt is due. Now, sure, Russia is technically capable of doing it, but if you lend someone money you, don't care about the reason they haven't paid it back. All you care about is that they haven't paid it back. So now everyone thinking of lending money to Russia will factor in the chance of them doing something so horrible that the world's major economies will actively prevent them from paying their debt back. Will people still lend in the future? Probably. But they'll be increasing the cost of doing this to make up for the additional risk.

While we were watching the Queen's funeral, conversation turned to Stalin (amongst other things) She was completely shocked to find out that Stalin was generally viewed as completely evil and that Hitler was only the third biggest murderer of the 20th century.
