  1. Bring it ON...as a farther NorCali Lifer...we don't suffer a problem of too much snow in the Sierras but too little as a general rule. We could use 4X more. Crossing Sierras mid winter has always required attention to weather, preparation and/or cancel trip, go around.

  4. Nice story. I pickup hitchhikers fairly often in general, some good experiences doing so and I used to hitchhike a lot many yr.s ago as a child/youth....sort of payback.

  6. Many may have built their lives around what was, lake side property, businesses and such. No easy way and no way to please everyone, but not as bad as what the Native tribes had to suffer since they were dismissed when over damming our rivers.

  8. Aluminum is in no way a "heavy metal", it's a major component of Earth's crust, ubiquitous and not generally a concern. The rest mentioned could be a concern but apparently of natural origin if not natural concentrations, still not likely a long term problem vs if the dams had never existed or 5 yrs forward.

  10.  @izziethetortilla5547  You don't seem to grasp the nature of the situation. It all happened extremely fast. Assuming you were the FIRST to know--the 30 minutes (minimum) it took you to drive from Chico to someplace in Paradise/Magalia you would have been surrounded by fire and a panicked torrent of folks trying to escape, cars crashing into eachother blocking the road, ppl getting out and running for their lives. Are you a really fast runner? There are reasons some 40 ppl and counting got burned alive. Determination is not always enough.

  11. How about granting lot owners extension of property to river edge? "Yes you lose the lake but you double your acreage." Not a complete reimbursement immediately but long term as the river area recovers it's beauty.

  19. It's their job description, turn everything into drama. Winter in the Sierras, situation normal. Driven those roads 4 decades and you could never expect easygoing mid winter on I-80, but it's highly maintained, they throw TONS of equipment to clear primary artery. Never closed for long.

  20. No easy solutions at THIS point to these catastrophic conditions WE have created but it doesn't have to be like this. Over a century ago fires were almost seasonal and they were healthy , necessary to keep the forest open and to prevent the possibility of these devastating, inevitable catastrophes. How many such disasters before we are motivated to take the necessary actions to reverse decades of mismanagement of our Western wild lands? The fact that some native tree species can't reproduce until fire burns under them should be highly compelling as to the necessity of frequent low level, cleansing fires in these areas.

  26. We store a lot of it, vast majority of fresh water on Earth is ground water and it is being replenished along with surface reservoirs. GREAT START to a drought busting rain season, but we need months of this. Edit: liquid fresh water I meant, ice sheets/glaciers not included.

  27. Make fantastic fertilizer, unpleasant to handle but that was a daily early morning ritual for us kids at grandma's resort at Clearlake, CA. Clean the beach and bury the carcasses around rose bushes or whatever. A few buckets would do wonders for a garden.

  32.  @thornil2231  Taking everything into account. Ground water top of list for several reasons, it's by far the biggest reservoir and fragile in ways we can't fix if damaged, subsidence is expected to be permanent, terrifically shortsighted.

  34. Good for him. I knew some folks were going to stay and save their homes, it's a tough call to stay or leave as you don't know how it's going to go. One thing for certain--the more ppl who stay and fight it the better chance all the homes have including the deserted ones.

For what it's worth--highly recommend "Blancoliro" channel here, he won't get airborne until weather clears but really knows the area and covers reservoirs, snow pack, fires, etc. He became popular for by far the best coverage of the Oroville spillway failure and rebuilding.

  38. West side, over half so far burned, was 100% beneficial to local ecology, grass and scattered oaks. Forest Service was debating how to burn it for yrs...easier to "debate", let inevitable happen, lol, than face responsibility, liabilities. Not to downplay those burned out in East half, but a ton was saved. (fear and feel for my fiends and neighbors, most OK so far)

  39. National parks ruin the places with excessive traffic and development too. Wilderness designation, keeping out all mechanization including such as bicycles is far more effective, much of the Sierras is so designated, you have to hike for days to get to the best places and it's that great filter, the lack of easy access that's the key. Tahoe hasn't been anywhere near as pristine as the backcountry since the first road to it.

  43. About once every 160 yrs a train of atmospheric rivers turns entire Central Valley into a huge lake for months, most recently in 1862 which permanently modified Sacramento. Will happen again. Some $1T in damages expected and of course it will be blamed on SUVs and cow farts by history deniers.
