  1. I think Charlemagne gave too much credit to BlackAndMissing. I caught the contradiction right away, but if I was ready to be skeptical and, people being people, that makes a difference. He should have done more research (as you did), and he should issue a correction and try to do better in the future. And Carlee should claim the reward from Crimestoppers for her own safe return, and use that to reimburse emergency services. And if that gets her a Nobel Prize in the Field of Chutzpah, as it should, that would provide extra funds. All of which might be equally likely to Charlemagne issuing a correction, but I'm ready to be surprised.

  4. Yes, I like it. Prosecutors are dropping charges for some people due to political bias or "bad optics," leaving private citizens no ways to defend themselves other than to kill offenders and hide the bodies. OTOH, it does have grounds for abuse. I keep seeing people take 13 items through the 10 items or fewer lane at the grocery store, and it's awfully tempting...

A problem with letting it resolve itself is that when another official gets caught with their hand in the cookie jar (their hand or whatever other anatomy...) and the university wants to terminate them and they aren't straight White males, there will be objections along the lines of, "why didn't you do it to this straight White guy?"

  13. To be fair, Hexum's shot was fatal because he didn't know that a blank can be fatal when the muzzle is pressed right up against your head. He should have been told, but if he'd used the gun as intended instead of thinking he was going to play Russian roullette and just get a loud noise, he would have been fine. In the case of Brandon Lee, that wasn't his fault at all. It was a freak accident, but stll the armorer's responsibility.

  22. Because that's not how drug overdoses work. Have people ODed on fentanyl with one third that amount? Yes. Have people survived having more fentanyl? Yes. There are doses that won't kill people and doses that will, but there's a lot of grey area in there that will depend on how acclimated they are to their drug (maybe very in GF's case) and what shape they're in (very poor, in GF's case).

  23.  @blkgranitess  Nate covered it somewhat. The drugs and Floyd's overall poor health contributed to the death, and nobody is denying that. If you rob a bank and someone has a heart attack, that person was probably in really bad health. But as long as the knee on the neck also contributed, that conceivably makes it felony murder.

  24.  @JorenMathews  Maybe. The medical examiner said it was a combination of things, including the knee. But like Nate said if you rob a bank and someone dies from a heart attack, it's legally felony murder. If the jury disregards rhe ME report then anything's possible.

  25.  @JorenMathews  i think a gentle.push isn't a felony so no felony murder. But as Nate described it, legally if a person is very unhealthy it's still the felon's fault. Ethically maybe not, but legally it is.

  26.  @JorenMathews  I can't agree with you there. A knee on the neck can be performed harmlessly, but that doesn't mean it can't cause harm, either. You can push someone without causing harm, and you can push someone in a way that does cause harm, right? You can twist someone's arm behind their back harmlessly or harmfully. You can put your knee on a neck in ways that don't cut off bloodflow, or ways that do. You can put a knee on a neck briefly, or keep doing it for several minutes.

  47. TBH, I'm not sure I'd charge Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter or negligent homicide for pulling the trigger. I would have checked the gun for live rounds and anyone knowledgeable about guns should have because it takes a moment to prevent a world of hurt, but it was someone else's responsibiity to make that a cold gun. OTOH, I'd charge him as the producer if that's possible.
