  21.  @americandreamisover9658  Keep dreaming -- NATO is far more of an economical structure for countries like the UK and Germany than a defensive one. The USA will not have a repeat of WW1, 2 and possible 3 without having a military presence in Europe. Europeans for whatever reason, cannot achieve peace on their continent without a foreign power overlooking or presenting itself with the confines of the continent. The only winner in WW2 was the Americans - an outside country coming in and constructing the European continent with the exception of former Warsaw Pact nations and Russia -and eventually they all fell apart. Russia lost 22 million people in WW2 and only could create a buffer zone (Warsaw Pact countries) which eventually fell apart as Russia didn't have the monetary means to continue the Cold War. Do you know how much money the US military presence pumps into the economy of Germany, UK, Italy, Greece, Netherlands. Belgium, and now most former Warsaw Pact nations? For example the Base or Post Exchange (Shopping center) at the Kaiserslautern Military Community/Ramstein Air Base makes more revenue than all the Post exchanges combined in the USA - do you know how many Germans are employed there? The same in the UK and other nations. You do realize that since it's birth NATO has always been led by an AMERICAN General - do you think that's a coincidence? The EU trying to build it's own military is a laugh - no French General is going to be able to command a German, Italian, Dutch, UK, Norwegian or other country's military and vice verse -- Europe lacks the homogony and exudes too many cultural and economical differences to create a combined force -- the EU struggles every day to maintain it's position from a country that itself has no central government and itself is literally split in 3 factions (Belgium). Europe still relies on the USA's GPS system - why is that? Europe has the European Space Agency, a first rate organization but who will fund it - what percentage will go to what country, who will repair it and at what costs? Europeans are too distinct and independent to sing cumbia hence the UK leaving the EU. The Ukraine issue of one of past expectations that neither camp could have foreseen. Russia is concerned that it's borders are surrounded by NATO countries - too late. Russia will not tolerate the Ukraine to also go "Nato" - understandable. Unfortunately, Ukraine is a sovereign nation and it decides what course of action to take for the betterment of it's population - Russia has to understand that. In reality, the Ukraine doesn't need to go NATO or EU - it will be supplied by the west economically and militarily regardless of Russia's opinion - that's reality. I can certainly understand Putin's concern, but his concern will be overridden by the mere fact of economics and trade - The Ukraine will eventually be armed to the teeth and in the European camp whether in Nato/EU or not.
