  40.  @cnccarving  No we wouldn't as US Radar Technology is FAR more advanced than what Russia had then and has now. Secondly, KAL 007 did fly into Russian Air Space over Sakhalin Island but Russian radar couldn't distingush KAL 007 from a US KC-135 Spy Plane that was flying in international waters near the Japanese Island of Hokkaido (Misawa AB) - that's how bad their radars were then. The USSR Pilot shot down the KAL 007 for two reasons - one the radar clutter of the Russian defense system couldn't distinguish between the two planes many distance apart and that months before, Mathias Rust (German Pilot) landed his Cessna in Red Square which not only showed that the Soviet Air Force wasn't well advanced, but it's ABM missile systems covering Moscow had serious setbacks as well. The USSR's old Command couldn't afford another "intrusion" of it's airspace giving the World a real glimpse of it's defensive drawbacks in technology and ordered the "plane" to be shot down. KAL 007 was a political victim based on weak Soviet Technology and cold war tactics used by the USA and it's allies. We are now seeing the Ukraine War playing out in bad ways in which political figures on both sides are maneuvering around at the expense of both average Ukraine/Russian citizens alike. To this date, both countries (USA/Russia) fly on the peripheral international waters off each other's coast as long as I have been born - that will not change nor it is an "alarm code red." I can however, assure you that the US Defense Systems are far more advanced that Russia's and have always been. Since the disintegration of the USSR in 1989, Putin has been trying to "upgrade" Russia to it's previous position - that's not going to happen as China has surpassed Russia in all areas of Defense - in short, Russia is a regional power but no longer the superlative power she once was. Outside of Nuclear War - which is a paper tiger as it's self-destruction and in particular with an opponent who is on "nuclear-equality" with a nation that is threatening nuclear war (in this case Russia), it's simply suicide - Putin knows this - he's not dumb. Unfortunately, Putin has placed himself into a corner when he attacked the Ukraine, by trying to establish the former USSR's geographical boundaries that no longer exist. The nation's that used to be satellite countries of the former USSR are all in NATO now - that was THEIR choice - plain and simple. Putin's provocations has done nothing but cause upheaval in the border areas and made Sweden/Finland join NATO - not what he was expecting. It would be nice if a peaceful solution could be found, but as long as Putin threatens and cries Wolf, he will bury himself deeper into a hole as NATO can match Russia and overwhelm it by both military, financial and economical means for a LONG time bleeding Russia's military dry and drying up it's financial means to wage a regional conflict. China has already told Putin there will be no involvement from them as their focus is more worth in economical trade with the USA their largest partner - even the warmongering with Taiwan has ceased as China knows, it will bring about nothing in the end. Personally, war is profit and it has always been --- it's always the poor average person of each country that suffers.
