  1. Crimea has been Russian since 1784. In 1954, Khrushchev transferred Crimea administration to Ukraine SSR to gain favor with Ukraine SSR. He did it without approval from Crimea or consideration of its Russian demographic. In 2014 Crimea voted (97% w/83% turnout) to be repatriated to Russia.

  2. If I were Putin, I would shut off all gas to Europe! That would, of course, impact revenues for Russia -- but temporarily. The EU leaders would hop on the next plane to Moscow (if they could find one they hadn't sanctioned) to beg Putin to turn the gas back on and vow to honor his conditions.

Interestingly, Putin has advised that the Ukraine crisis was not substantively discussed in the pre-meetings in Riyadh, as re-establishing trust and working towards re-establishing relations and cooperation have to come first. He has also said that the aggressors are not in a position to demand anything from Russia. After WW1, the economically debilitating German reparations resulted in the rise of Hitler and WW2. Now we have a situation where Trump is demanding debilitating reparations, in the form of one-sided deals, from Ukraine, its foremost ally and proxy in its war against Russia. You couldn't make it up. The Ukraine War is a US-initiated and funded war. It is culpable for the destruction of Ukraine. It has lost the war and must eat that, despite a new president, who does have the power to end it. Trump would do well to just walk away. Announce that the US will no longer support, fund, supply, or weaponize Ukraine. Order NATO and all US military personnel out of Ukraine. Forget about his wheeling and dealing to recoup sunk costs. Agree to Putin's terms that are not detrimental to the US. Create profitable cooperation and trade with Russia to ultimately earn way more than $350 billion for the US.

Of course, we knew there were civilian women and perhaps wives of Azov in the dungeons of Azovstal, but seeing females in their Azov uniforms surrendering was a jolt -- sharpshooters perhaps? I have watched videos of Donetsk troops talking about female sharpshooters shooting from civilian buildings in Mariupol.

  25. Last night, after watching the Duran's guest appearance on Jackson Hinkle's channel, I thought more about "Biden's" op-ed. I don't think Jake Sullivan, Antony Blinken, Victoria Nuland, or whoever wrote the op-ed is smart enough to include the word "just" deliberately to swing two ways. My guess is that they don't have a clue about grammar and simply don't know where to insert commas -- in this case, before the word, "just."

  31. We may not find out who of such importance was in Azovstal. Could be that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres actually was negotiating a trade-off for the release of certain people (versus negotiating humanitarian corridors, as the Western media reported, that the Russians had already arranged). Maybe an arrangement that the Ukrainian Military will allow release of civilians and others from Azovstal in return for silence about their identities. -- Just another thought to add to the mix.

  34. The problem I see with Locals is membership-for-a-price. I see this as an issue for the internet as a whole. Every site is either asking (and counting on) patrons, asking for donations, moving or already behind a paywall. People simply don't have the money to contribute to all these different sites to obtain nuances on the news and their own favorite channels. Meanwhile, advertising is broken. It didn't work before the internet, and it is not working now despite snooping algorithms. The algorithms pick out keywords in your emails, commentary or visits and matches them to products, invariably totally off the mark. The world is waiting for tech innovators who can sort out this dilemma and streamline membership costs in an affordable way.

  49. I watched on video, the Russians picking up the children in Mariupol, with their parents present. They also picked up old and infirm people. As they picked up the children, Ukrainian shells were targeting their homes. As they drove off in their vans, they had to dodge those Ukrainian shells.
