Boris Johnson sent Liz Truss to "negotiate with the well known diplomatic, Sergey Lavrov, after a UK TV interview in which she pretty well declared war on Russian and threatened to wipe Russia off the map. Her exact words on sanctions were that Britain would "hit targets including those who are key to the Kremlin's continuation of the Russian Regime." Her meeting with Lavrov played out on the internet. She increased her threats, was ignorant about the relevant geography. Lavrov was disgusted. It was a trigger for the Russians that calls for diplomacy were a waste of time. The West wanted war. I believe it was the next day that Putin recognized Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states. They asked for his help to stop the Ukrainian genocide of Donbass Russians (over 14,000 Russian men, women and children killed by that shelling of civilians to date). Russia created its SMO and acted unilaterally to end the genocide.
